Possibly Starting an Edible Culture vendor (Poll)
    #6779614 -

thinkin bout starting my lab back up to make some cash and wanted to check the feasibility of selling cultures. A few years ago i was ramping up culture production for a gourmet msuhroom growing op but funding fell through so i got a nice lab set and not much to do with it.
Do you want to order edible cultures (petris/slants)?
You may choose only one
What form of cultures would you want?
You may choose many
How much would you pay for cultures?

Stamets and others sell cultures for over $100. Don't sell yourself short. That's the market price.

id rather sell em cheap so everyone can get in on em easily. Plus staments grain masters are more than just cultures. i think theyre unique isolates tested through to fruit. I dont remember the exact details of what made em special though

His cultures are in test tubes, as are everyone else's. If you're going to sell cultures, they have to be proved, tested isolates.

why in test tubes? i like petris wrapped in parafilm. can easily toss one in a sterile poly bag and impulse seal it

I think when it comes down to the work involved in making a slant or a dish culture, lets face it there's not too much work or material involved, so those aren't unreasonably low figures.  That is, if you didn't have to spend lots of R&D money to acquire your mother strains in the first place....

$100+ is probably well worth it for excellent and unique strains produced by a veteran mycologist in a 100 rating clean room, especially if you're a commercial producer.

But I wouldn't complain about $15 cultures if he's happy to sell them at that price.

In my experience, the edible culture market is fairly limited with the demographic that visits these forums. I don't see this as a viable business without aggressive external marketing. Good luck though.

Poll taken, results registered, life is good.

I agree with WorkMan, but I think that if you could market to the common folks you could do better. When I tell people I grow mushrooms the first thing they say is "ARE THEY MAGIC MUSHROOMS?!".

If you could somehow demonstrate to people that growing fresh, edible mushrooms can be fun and 'easy' I think you could do it.

I remember my high school used to buy these cheap ass terrariums made out of sealed jars with about 2" dirt in the bottom and a couple of seeds. Just open, water, and wait.

I would never pay high prices for those kinds of cultures unless I had my own business. Besides... I can clone the stuff from the supermarket I like

I WOULD(/could see myself) however buy 100$ worth of cultures. At 15-20$ a pop.

Go cheap. If make nice cultures, I can guarantee at least one order.

Short of the cultures I've cloned from the wild, I've paid $100 to $500 for every single culture in my library, and I have a few hundred.

You'll never get a quality, good fruiting clone from the grocery store. They expand their mycelium to the breaking point of senescence before fruiting to prevent competitor mushroom farms from getting the cultures. When you get to the high end commercial edibles, cultures are expensive, but at $100, you make that back the very first harvest.

You also want to be very careful not to use a purchased culture and resell it. Every culture lab has patented their strains and it's extremely easy to put a culture on agar and determine if it's your strain or not. Stamets and the others do it daily, and file mega lawsuits against anyone selling their cultures.

Before a culture is put into a test tube, it goes through a process of isolation on petri dishes to determine that it's contaminant free. You can't store a culture long term in a petri dish because of all the agar that's exposed to air and the thin layer of agar itself. It will soon dry out and the mycelium will die. That's why test tube cultures are sold, not petri dish cultures.

There probably is a limited market for culture syringes for growers who don't have lab facilities and simply want to grow some oysters or shiitake, but in that case you'd have to spend many hours in the forest hunting for mushrooms to clone, then growing out each one to see if the fruits you harvested are good domestic cultivation fruiting strains or not. That's why edible cultures cost more than simple cubensis spore syringes which anyone can make with a print and a glovebox. You could grow out edibles from prints, then isolate strains until you find excellent fruiting strains, but if you went to all that time and expense, you'd lose your ass selling them for less than the going rate, which starts out at $100 bucks a pop.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, but I just hate to see folks waste their money. I have lots of cultures and a nice lab to work in, yet I don't sell cultures for a reason. I've given away a lot, but never sold a single one.

wow i didnt think they patented the strains. Makes me wonder if my prints are somehow related to patented strains. Im not too sure of any of their origins except one. Just people mailing me prints. Any way that i can verify them easy?

'Strains' are isolates. Prints go back to original genetics, so nobody has a patent on what you grow from spores.

http://www.scidev.net/Features/index.cfm?fuseaction=readFeatures&itemid=166&language=1:

"A long-standing principle of patent law is that individuals cannot patent naturally-occurring phenomena such as elements, chemicals or minerals.

Yet, subtly and without fanfare, the prohibition on patenting products of nature has fallen into legal disuse. The US Patent and Trademark Office and federal courts now routinely issue patents on discovered natural substances if they are "isolated and purified" or otherwise (insubtantially) modified. Naturally-occurring DNA and protein molecules have, consequently, become the subject of thousands of patent applications.

In this article, Linda J Demaine and Aaron X Fellmeth describe the "Substantial Transformation Test", a method designed to distinguish products of nature from patentable inventions."

If I was limited to $100 cultures , I'd have to quit this hobby!
I start with spores and inoculate a substrate then collect some mycilia and grow it off agar and continue that process till I get All of my fruiting substrate inoculated and growing.

So the $18 edible culture syringes should be avoided?

Hi mushfriends

I have 10 minutes loose today so I came back here to read you and I couldn't stay cold on that subject. I had to say something to encourage you.

You can make a big collection of very profitable strains without paying a fortune. I'm the proof. I don't have thousands of $ to spend, if you have it good for you. But If you don't, be resoursfull, your skill will be better, if I did you can too.

You have seing my mush on this site and few of them came from freesporeprints prints (pioppino, nameko, white foot, reishi etc.). I develop new strains every year. I'm now trying to develop a shiitake strain that could give mush at colder temp to extend the period, due to my situation here.

To my opinion, Starting from a cheap culture or free spores is the best way to grow mush for poor people like me and maybe some of you. If you work well you'll have the same results (and sometime better)as the one you pay for the name on the label.

From my experience buying a culture on plate is not a good idea to start, its good only with ground mail shipping with a new fresh culture in the plate. A cultureslant is the best. If you don't have any money you have freesporeprints to help you (I could make a good strains with + -80% of the spores I've tried there). You'll work more to develop but your skill at the end will be a lot higher and you'll understand better how grow different species.

I wish you that growing mush gives you happiness, the reason to be on this earth.

Bye,
