micololo2 is right too. You can develop good strains from spores. That's why it's a great idea for all aspiring mycologists to learn agar skills.

No, you don't need a flow hood, though it makes life easier.
A glove box or a clean room with a table will work fine for doing agar work.
Clean work area and clothes along with good technique is all that is needed to do agar work.

With a flow hood most likely you would have to put up with less contamination.
A lot of people have very little contamination with just a glove box or even working on an open table.

I use a glove box, but at times am unattentive and clumsy so I have to put up with some contamination. There are people that post here that have almost nil without a flowhood.

I've actually seen a post or two where there were side by side comparisons of Stamets $150 licensed culture, and Sporeworks $18 syringe of Morchella sp. by Brainbreath at The Nook. He said Sporeworks outperformed Fungi Perfecti's strain by a long shot, so saying the cultures are incomparable is probably right, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

In fact Workman is so knowledgeable and works so hard on a lot of his things, I'm sure his stuff is pretty competitive.

BUT, I have not done any side by side work myself...and I do buy some of the high dollar strains from aloha medicinals from time to time. It's good to know the strains are commercial quality before you even start messing with them.

Testing isolates can be a chore!

JD

Stamets has the magic power of BS that he inherited from PT Barnum - 50 cents worth of jello and clone is worth 100+ because he is so cool and you really believe.......
Good isolates can be taken from any source and it really isn't that much work. I think it is cheaper for big companies to pay a "convenience" price that is really the cost of doing a little of your own greenhousing.
A convenience situation means only that - it doesn't mean the same and better strains aren't gotten the old fashioned way.

Wrong my friend. I spend my whole summers in the mountains collecting tissue samples, and probably cloned over 200 Oysters before I got this one last summer. None perform anywhere near as well as it does, and it performs like this time after time.

I'm not making a commercial for Paul here because so far, I haven't ordered an oyster strain from him or anyone else that matches this one. I'm just saying it's easy, yes, but only 'easy' if you have several months out of the year to backpack deep into the old-growth forests in search of new strains, and have the skills and equipment to take dozens of cultures each time, then the space to grow out each one to the fruiting stage to determine the one(s) that are the superior prospects. This oyster strain easily outperforms any commercial strain I've got in my collection, and I've got them from at least a dozen culture banks.

....and how much is a peice of thy culture brer rabbit? (looks very nice!)

I give you the space and grace for sure because you are right and capable of the "athletics" of mushrooms and I know most people aren't. I'm sure you personally go through more dishes in a year than all of us and the school combined. But you must admit - is this not the same guy who told you, when dealing with suckers and victims, to "deepen your voice a little and speak with authority".....heh-heh...I think it is yes?

The thing about you RR is you talk in ways that enable others to pursue these things and to see what they will have to compete with in the arena - that is different than just another diatribe justifying ludicrous culture prices from companies with great packaging.

Indeed, even our wild strains here are not as strong as yours up there and have to be cultured up over time.

I probably shouldn't have even commented on this thread because I'm not trying to make a living by mushrooms and many are.

What about those of us who rely on such sources as grainspawn instead of setting up our own strains? How do we know we're getting a reliable strain, and the best bang for our buck out of what we do purchase?

You'd have to buy from a spawn supplier who sells commercially productive spawn. Even then, you are bound to get different types of mushroom strains. Your best bet is to talk with someone at several of the spawn suppliers and see what they have. Then tell them your specific needs, climate, and substrates and see if they have any good matches for you.

Both Cryogenicz and I have used the Amycel 3015 strain, and it is a very good producer. www.amycel.com

There are lots of other spawn suppliers for commercial strains.

I'm not sure about the strains the vendors here have. You should ask all of them too, especially Workman from the Spore Works.

so wait, so is it even worth getting a 23$ culture syringe from vendors on here?or would you just fruit it out then clone to get better fruiting results? (just like wth cubes?)

just some updates on my progress. Ive been able to get spores from good genetics of portabellas, baby portabellas, and shiitake. So i been busy growing out these multispore innoculations as well as nursing some of my older cultures back to health. Im afraid my pink oyster cultures are toast but blue and pheonix are performing well. Hericium is coming along slowly but surely. And the old shiitake culture as well as the new multispore aquired cultures are all doing excellent. Black poplar is also growing strong. Some of the petris are about to be over grown so im going to have to start putting them in cold storage. Within the next couple weeks im sending out some cultures to a few people ive been in contact with who agreed to send me back spores and pics of their results. I just dont have the space yet to be fruiting the strains so im glad i have a nice community to help me out with the testing.
