Chantrelle? or not...

I found these last fall in northern Illinois among some hardwood trees (I think it's growing by either an oak or a hickory tree, which is alive not a stump). I was hoping they might be Chantrelles (cantharellus cibarius) but further comparison seems to point toward Jack-O-Lantern (omphalotus olivascens), aka the false chantrelle. I did not know to check at the time for any luminescence which would be another indicator that they are the toxic lookalike. There were quite a few little colonies around other trees in the area as well, and some slime and jelly and brain types of fungus also.



Anyway, I'm sure they will be back again this year and if anyone wants a specimen or spores, etc, I would love to collect and send for postage.

Armillaria . edible, but i've never tried them. chanties do look similar so keep looking. tip-they wont be growing in clusters at the base of trees.you're more likely to find them scattered among oaks a few feet from the base

at first glance they look more like jack-o-lanterns, not chantrelles.
They are growing too clustered and look to orange, and the cap doesn't "cup up" as most chantrelles I've seen do.:shrug:

they are not armillaria,you just told him a poisoness mushroom was edible.they aint chanterelles either.look like jacks ,says me.

they are honey mushrooms not jack o lanterns.

the key in telling Armillaria apart from chanterelle are the gills.

those Armillaria grow like crazy here in the fall, i've seen hundreds of colonies in a single day

Jack - o - Lanterns, I'm nearly 100% sure.  I am definitely 100% sure they are not chanterelles (which never grow directly from wood), and also 100% sure they are not armillaria (which they look nothing like).  BurtonRebel - please don't give IDs that you are not 100% sure of.  As Coon said, you just told someone a very poisonous mushroom was edible. :frown:  If you are going to give an ID that you are not 100% sure of, tell the person you are not completely sure, and try to be cautious.

As several people have stated, those are Omphalotus, commonly known as Jack O'Lanterns. They are poisonous and should not be eaten. Interestingly, fresh specimens glow in the dark.

Spudz76, there have been lots of poisonings from people mistaking those for Chanterelles, so you're not alone in your guess. The easiest way to tell the difference is that Chanterelles grow on the ground and Jack O'Lanterns grow from wood. Another is that Jack O'Lanterns have gills, but Chanterelles have blunt ridges instead of true gills.

LOL.  Sorry burton, I take that back now that you've rescinded your ID.  Plus the temptation to call someone a Jack-O-Ass when we were talking about Jack-O-Lanterns was too much! :wink: We all make mistakes here, I've been making tons lately.  The important thing is admitting it when new evidence shows that you are wrong.

Those are jack o'lanterns they contain gastrointestinal irritants and some say they contain muscarine. To any extent the gills glow in the dark and should never be eaten.


Word for the wise, chants never grow on/from wood.

I will certainly go look for the glow this fall when they come back, maybe try my hand at some extended exposure pics. Even with this old Canon digital I have had good luck getting things like a faintly glowing Aurora Borealis on the 30 second exposure mode. Showed 10x more brightness than my eyes could even see, though grainy compared to what you might get with good old film and a super extended exposure. There was some light pollution where I did those which didn't help quality though so I'm curious what a rock steady and totally black surrounding environment would turn out. Oh, and the aurora moves quite a bit in 30 seconds whereas these most likely won't.

Thanks for the confirmation of Jack-O-Lanterns. It will be fun to show a few people if they end up glowing nice.
