jack-o-lantern in san diego county, ca
    #7964570 - 02/01/08 12:03 PM (16 years, 14 hours ago)

Last night I happened upon a large cluster or orangish mushies springing out of a stump. they were big and kind of old, but the color and habitat made me think Jack-O-Lantern.

I brought some home, and the gills were glowing a nice dim green.

what is the current name for these? Clitocybe illudens?

I will post pics later

up north we used to call those the 'both holes mushies'. my first time I confused them with chantrelles, and it's common for beginners.

eat enough of those and you'll spend the next day on the toilet with both holes open

In California, our Jack-O-Lantern is Omphalotus olivascens. O. illudens is the East Coast species.

jesus, I've tasted jack's before I can't honestly understand how you could confuse the taste, I would think you'd know right away that you didn't have that unique chanterelle taste, btw chant's dont grow off wood. :boobs:

I was wondering if anyone has spores from Jack O Lanterns, or any bioluminescent for that matter, that I could procure. I'm really interested in these species and since they're not active, all the better to ask about.

Secondly, I was wondering what conditions they have been found in. The reason I dug up this old thread is because these were found close to where I live, and if I could hunt some that would be great.
