Chanterelles or Jack O'Lantern
    #11172535 - 10/03/09 01:29 AM (8 years, 18 days ago)

I found this spot and got an ID about a week ago saying they were chanterelles.  I went back after a good rain last night and found these 20 yards away or so under the same tree.

They were all spread out under the tree covering a good area.

I was curious about possible Jack O' Lantern's which (to my knowledge) always grow clustered.

I am fairly new and was wondering if this type of minor clustering is normal for chanterelles?

So what is your opinion?

the first and third pics look like a look alike. Possibly the Jack-O-Lantern. The mega give away is if it's bio-luminescent. If it glows in the dark NO EATING.

Ohh the large cap in pic #2 is about 2" at widest,
and that was one of the larger caps in the area.
Shouldn't that size alone rule out Jack O'lantern?

Ok, I guess I'll take a few home tomorrow and
bring them in the pantry with the lights out

I appreciate for the advice.

To get a good ID on a possible chanterelle you MUST take a good shot of the gills.
However, that doesn't look like Omphalotus illudens. I'd say it's Cantharellus cibarius, but I'd like to see a clear shot of the underside of the caps without the dirt and from a good angle.

I plan on going back out tomorrow when I have time.
I'll be sure to take a good shot of the gills.
I'll also be doing a full description on it tomorrow including spore print.

I appreciate all the feedback.  You all are helping me more than you know.

Those look like chanterelles to me. They should have a fruity smell and a slightly peppery taste.

i'd like to see a fruit sliced in half...

to see if it's white under the orange outerskin.

the habitat is wrong in the pictures...but it looks like a chant to me.

Those are Cantharellus cibarius, slightly weathered.
