Hi Vat,

That is exactly my situation right now also.

I followed the Roadkill/Pavlov's Dog horse poo tek to a tee and the mycelium just doesnt seem to want to run through it. I have been pasteurizing at 165-170 for about 40 mins. I've used powdered pf cake, crumbled pf cake and now also birdseed as spawn. It starts to colonize a little then dies off.

The only thing I can think of is that somehow the pasteurization is not doing the trick and there is bacteria stunting the growth of the mycelium.

I have read the posts of some who talk of actually completely sterilizing their poo before innoculation so I'm currently trying that. I have 2 pans of moist poo covered tightly with foil in the oven right now. 300 degrees for about an hour is what I gathered would be sufficient. I plan on using 1 pint birdseed per pan for spawn.

I will keep you and everyone else updated in this post...

Thanks for making this post Vat...I was gonna post pretty much the same thing later on...

If my opinion matters, I am a newbie with a one mush rating afterall, the longer you can do it the better.

Joe tries to keep it as long as he can at 160 or so. But at least 1 hr. Usually he tries to let it go for 2 or so.

IMO, you cant over-pasteurise, as long as the temp is kept in the correct range. But under-pasteurisation on the other hand will result in much more susceptable(sp.) substrate.

How much substrate are you using??... if you use too little it probably wont work... More IMO is better... Ive dont 4 bread pans with a 1/2 pint of BRF/VERM... Only 2 turned out.. With the same starin I tried 1/2 Birdseed to Breadpan and it worked wonderfully... The faster it colonised, the less chance of contams....

A Raccoon I know does the dry method in an oven, with dung in pot or pan. He does it around 160 to 175 for 1, sometimes several hours. He uses an internal oven thermometer, as he doesnt trust the dial. So long as it all heats up, then maintains a steady temp, for at least an hour. It has worked for him. A few times, he left it several hours & it didnt seem to matter.

He then lets it cool, rehydrates w/sterile water & goes from there.

Im gonna do another batch tonight and I will pasteurize for 1.5-2 hours. I will also use a lot more spawn and see what happens.

Pasteurizing for a longer time makes sense...I hope it works.

I will post my results in coming days....

I just baked mine in the oven at 300 for an hour. I added the water beforehand and covered with foil tightly.

Is adding the water before you bake it a bad idea?

Is it better to hydrate the poo after its baked?

Does it even matter?

On my poo that failed I pasteurized it at 165 for 45 mins. I did have a bunch of poo that I was trying to do at the same time. I had it all jammed in a pillow case in a cooking pot. It was a pretty tight fit. Maybe I had too much in my pot and not all of it was in the correct temp. range for a long enough time.

Has anyone else jammed a bunch of poo in a pot and have it turn out alright?

Like I said, I will now try pasteurize some for a longer time and see what happens...

Well I just did another pillowcase full...Pasteurized for 2 hours. Hopefully it all got pasteurized. If it still doesn't work, I'm just gonna try pasteurizing a little at a time instead of an entire pot jammed full. How much were you trying to do at a time?

I really dont think the pillowcase is bad. One could always punch a few holes in the pillowcase if drainage was a problem. I could be wrong though. Let me know how it goes for ya.

Let me know as soon as you get it to work and I will do the same ok?

My next test will be to pasteurize dry in the oven. 170 for 1.5 hours. Let cool. Then add sterilized water. Innoclutate. Pray...etc.

I can't believe I haven't gotten this to work yet. It seems so easy.

I'd like to see some more pics of horse poo in action too. How did YOU get it to work? Anything anyone thinks might help us get this right, please chime in now...Thanks

Here's an e-z pasturization tek for all you knobs.

1. get a 5 galon paint bucket from your local hardware store (remember to get the lid cause they sell them seperate)
2. get a pillowcase (yea that's right!)
3. fill it up (you choose with what)
4. boil enough water to totaly cover the pillowcase in water
a. once the water hit's the 'hard boil'(if you don't know what this is, read a cook book! ) phase wait 10min
5. pour your water in the buckets
6. slam the lid down and wait to cool......
7. spawn (use yoru favorite spawning method)

fin!

good luck!
