Earplugs at concerts

So, I see live music about 15 nights out of any given month, in a variety of venues small to large, and I think my ears are really taking a beating. I've always been anti-earplug...it just didn't seem right to me.
Well my girlfriend ordered herself a pair of earplugs and got me a pair as well - from this website: http://www.earlove.net.
Last night we had 8th row center tickets to Iggy Pop and we knew it was gonna be LOUD. Our earplugs had arrived the day before so we knew this was the perfect trial run. And I have to say - for certain shows that I know will be loud, I can't imagine NOT wearing those earplugs. THe sound was crisp, not muffled, and when I did a comparison by taking them out for a while I was honestly astonished at how much straight-up painful white noise my ears were being bombarded with.
Weird. Earplugs? Who knew.

Yup, I used to be anti-earplug too. Then I went to a Tool concert and sat like 10 feet from the speakers. Luckily I brought some with me. It was so painful at first, but then I gave in and threw the plugs in and haven't looked back since.

I wear ear plugs 150 to 200 days of the year. I would probably be death now if I didn't.

I went to a show last Tuesday in a small venue. For about an hour I was right by the stage, but off to the side so the speakers were blasting at my left side.
The next day I had serious ringing in my left ear (and that muffled, just-after-concert quality in that side) and it lasted all day.
Then I woke up Thursday and to my horror my ear was *still* ringing loudly. It faded throughout the day, but I think from now on I'm wearing earplugs to concerts.
I already have some degree of permanent ear-ringing; I don't want it to get any worse.

hmm, I might have to invest in some earplugs. I like watching noise bands quite a bit, and while the ear-terror is fun, I think I'm slowly going deaf. In general things seem much less audible than they used to. But....the loudness.. the intense atmosphere.. hm, I'm torn.

my senior year of high school i had an internship at a recording studio (I also worked there for a year after i graduated). I used to goto concerts at least 3 nights a week at that point in my life and discovered it really interfered with my job as a sound engineer. The owner of the studio recommended a pair of ear plugs, since then i haven't looked back, even though i'm no longer a engineer.
Those earloves look sweet, i am gonna order some this weekend.

Definitely important man, I already can notice how my right ear feels more "bassy" and my left more clear, and I'm not that big into abusing my ears.
I can't even fathom what some people using bad earplugs and playing loud music in the underground are suffering.

Depending on the musician, the venue, or a combination of the two, earplugs may or may not be necessary. if you are a musician yourself or just care about your hearing, wear some damn earplugs. either that or don't stand so close to that speaker.

if you ever do forget your earplugs, just use toilet paper and shove it in there. better than going death!

Haha, I told my roommate (schoolin' for sound engineering) about ear love. He was all "Well, I don't want those. I'm going to a doctor to get the real thing, made just for me." Sounds...expensive.

everybody's ears have their own built in audio "padding".
After listening to about 90-100 dB's for a few minutes, your ears "clamp" down.
When you wear earplugs, and pull them out halfway through the show, of course it is going to be blaring, because it is like walking from a library to a Man o' war concert instantly.
The best/cheapest earplugs to use are firing range ear plugs, because they have their own compression driver/diaphragm in them, meaning they will maintain high freq. fidelity at a constant dB level.
At work, I use those regular foam, cheap earplugs, but I only use them once the mix is set because they really dampen down all the low end horribly.

You gotta make sure you smoke the cigarette first, though.
