Ben Harper / Jack Johnson concert
    #1785835 - 08/06/03 06:48 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

MY friends saw em in LA and said ben harper played burn one down for 20 minutes, and got really really into it.  We're gonna try to roll a J that will last 20 minutes to smoke during the song   anyone else seeing a show on their tour?

I've been attending concerts pretty regularly since I was about 14, at first just punk shows around the south bay, and then bigger venues / bands as we got our licenses. Last night's concert was unquestionably the best concert i've ever seen.

Jack Johnson's opening was nice, the SD crowd was really receptive to him and you could tell he appreciated it. By the end of his encore, the crowd was ready for Ben. The moon was close to full and the night was warm, the vibe was great.

Let me say this: studio recordings do not do ben harper and the innocent criminals justice. I've liked ben harper for a while but I was not expecting this. He is a powerhouse musician, his stage presence rivals ANYONE. I feel like I've finally gotten a taste of what it must have been like to see bob marley or jimi hendrix. The guy is so versatile, he'd go from some amazing screaming solos on his slide guitar to roots reggae to acoustic that had many many people in tears.

Highlights:
during the first encore jack johnson came back out, and the two covered bob marley's "high tide or low tide." Its one of the best songs about friendship ever.
Burn one down, the place went up in smoke, and they extended that song to around 15-20 minutes. during the middle of it he had a conversation with someone on a random cell phone. he put the phone up to the mic and let them address the crowd.
With my own two hands, this marley-esque reggae song, became a cover of bob marley's "war." I thoght to myself, "this is the closest i'll ever come to seeing a bob marley concert in my life."
When he played "Walk Away," the crowd softly san along, and he said there hasn't been a crowd that was so quiet for that song since paris, france. He was stoked.

i'm going tonight!!!

I can't wait. my brother was at the SD show, and he was saying that if you stand out back, albeit for a couple hours, they'll come out and chat til everyone is gone, they're that cool.

I'll let you know tomorrow how the show went

wowzas....
this show is definitely in my top 3. we got there so early we were 3 feet from the railing, bout 6 feet from the stage.
DJ Logic spun bad ass shit, i'm so glad we got there early. this guy's the man.
Jack was real laid back, played just about all of his stuff, definitely my favorites. He'd never been to phx before and was very appreciative of our reaction to him.

Then Ben came on... wow what stage presence. the whole band is just this overflowing mass of talent and energy and coolness. They played for a loong time, bout 2 hours with 2 encores. A couple times Ben stopped and started talkin to people in the audience, just picking random people and saying what's up. Juan the bassist played this bad ass 4 minute solo during "Steal My Kisses" right in front of us, that guy is amazing, and hilarious.
The new guitarist, the guy from the Black Crowes, looked kinda bored sometimes, kinda didn't fit. tho he had some killer solos.
Everything was just so inspiring, spiritual, funky, heartfelt, good music.

GO SEE HIM, even if you gotta drive to another state!

I think Ben will end up with the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, even Marley, as a poetic artist with an amazing stage presence, he has one hell of a talent and has a very important message.

As for Jack..... Well he's cool and everything but.. a ... well... umm.... Momma told me not to say something if it isn't positive...

He's just to simplistic for me I guess, he doesn't take me anywhere.

adom, i can see where you're coming from, that was my first impression. His music is that way, totally... he uses the same strumming pattern for most of his tunes. Tho i realized thru more listening that he is quite the poet. In a mellow, easy-going not over the top way, he has some interesting things to say about life, society, commercialism, etc.

But to each his own, my best friend hates one of my favorite bands...
