Casing idea.. what do you think

How's this for an idea... probably been thought of already but here i go.


You've just completed your casing. You have your substrate on the bottom and some vermiculite on top.

How about sticking a straw in the middle of the casing tin, so that when you are to add water (say after a flush or if it begins to dry out) you simply put some steralized water in a steralized syringe and inject a few CC's of water into the straw. The water would flow down the straw and into the casing.

That way, your not spraying water all over the place that could possibly damage mycelium or cause contamination.

Or is spraying a casing actualy a benefit in regards to providing extra humidity for the overall envoirnment in the terranium?

Is my idea too far fetched or what?

Remember that misting does not damage mycellium. It will in large/heavy amounts. Misting can be used to hold back the mycellium from colonizing the surface fast. Works a charm. Never had contams. A lack of moisture is rare in casing applications. And if they do get dry ..just mist them. Straws work great in cake applications because they lose a lot of moisture.Like a casing, cakes aren't design to 'hold' moisture in. Thats why the humidity is generally higher for cakes.

I'de be scared that the substrate layer didn't wick up all that water and I was left with some bacteria-ridden water on the bottom of the casing. Just spraying the casing layer as to provide moisture and a good myco-climate.
