Girlfriends going off to college... a little bummed to say the least. (Cathartic Vomit)

Well my girlfriend of almost a year and a half was recently accepted into New York University. She tells me she hates Orange County, California and wants to get out and experience new things while she is still under the financial wing of her parents. I cant blame her. I feel like it would be wrong of me to try and convince her to change her mind for my own selfish reasons. It seems that NYU is what she really wants, and who the hell am i to stand in the way of something shes worked so hard to get to. She is definitely my first love so this entire experience as a whole has been very surreal. I love her to death, but is she worth (and am i worth to her) putting everything on hold for? Of course we say its worth it now, but im lucky enough to have never been put in a position where temptation was offering to tongue my balls. I know its entirely possible, but will the time apart strengthen what we have or cause us to grow apart. I Know being as young and naive as i am i am probably making too much of this but this whole thing is still fucked...

i agree with script. u should get a new girl the day she leaves and ditch the new girl if she comes back, but thats just my fucked up way of looking at things. that will also show u that there's more than one fish in the sea and it will help u get over her and u may decide u dont want her anymore, cuz she will probly be runnin around up there screwin some damn yankee.

not about worth man. shit happens. easy to say I know. that whole 'fish in the sea' gig is true, but won't mean anything to you till you find a few more.

Having one love of your life your entire life is rather dull and boring in my opinion.

If you really do love her, let her do her thing. She'll probably find someone else, as you should too. Let this be an opportunity to become really good friends. I recently did that with a girl I broke up with, and the relationship has grown in other ways. I can now apply what I have learned with this last one to the next one.

don't let your selfishness lose a potential lifelong friend. It's THOSE that there aren't many of and are the most valueable.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

There's no way to keep a relationship over that distance and under those conditions. It's not fair to either you or her. You love her. Leaving it this way, you always will. But you should accept the change as exactly that: a change, not a loss. It seems you understand that-- now you got to get yourself to believe it.

You probably won't be together again after she leaves, but don't rule it out - stranger things have happened.

What you really gotta do is take a look at this relationship: look at the good things you've learned from it and the things you've learned NOT to do, and apply that to all future relationships.

GL, and try not to fret it too much. P.S. if you ever go visit her, holler at me i'm tryin to come hit up the olson twins.

i'm gonna agree with the consensus here.
its over-atleast for now.

if you try to maintain something that is downright unreasonable to maintain(like a relationship with someone 3000 miles away) you will undoubtedly run into problems, and in the long run you will likely end up hating each other.
if you let each other live you will at very least have wonderful memories of each other, and potentially a great friend down the line.

man i've actually been through this twice. the one girl will likely never speak to me again, the other is the only honest to god, thick and thin, real friend that i have.

take your pick.

You won't take anybody's advice anyway and you're gonna do whatever you want, just do the right think and don't think with your smaller head.

Thanks everyone for the support. I feel like i should definitely try my best to enjoy the remaining time i have with her before she goes, although its been kinda hard to just do that when i think about the fact she's going to be gone in 6 months. I feel like ive learned an epic amount about the opposite sex, relationships, and myself due to my time with this girl so thats pretty good at least. I definitely plan on trying to utilize as much of that info later on down the road.

I just feel kinda confused on what i should be doing about this situation...
1) continue on doing what were doing with intentions of trying to make a long distance relationship work when the time comes. Considering my folks said they'd help me out and fly me out there a few times a year, which is pretty nice of them.
2) Tell her i have too many doubts and dont think its possible and we should just be friends (i cant see me telling her this and it going well, because whenever i mention my doubts she feels like im being self defeating and gets discouraged). Plus if i gave up on the relationship i feel like ill always wonder, "what if?". But then again who knows what ill think or feel even a week from now and i have now idea what lies ahead of me either.

regardless i definitely need a new hobby or two to keep my mind occupied.

Keep it that way, and live your lives together day to day-- let things happen as they will.
I know from a similar experience that you can't forget about the inevitable, but you can keep it from displacing the times you have now, right in front of you-- at least until the time is right to make all of these decisions-- enjoy your summer...

have you (thought about) asking her what she wants to do when she leaves (if you haven't already).

It would suck if you come up with this big plan on what you want to do, just to have her say she has plans of her own.

These kinds of relationships can last, but that's rare.  Enjoy these last few months, see what happens afterwards.....but be prepared to move on. You two are going to be on opposite coasts, and while it could work out, odds are it won't. Such is life my friend. Good luck.

i broke up with my girflriend before i went to school, and now its 3 years later and she transfered back over here, and we started hangin out again.

nothings impossible!
