Using hydrated lime to adjust ph of cactus soil mix?
    #6737963 -

I was going to make a mix of 1 compost 2 small rocks 1 sand for proportions.  Should I adjust the ph of the mix with a dash of hydrated lime (like you'd use for a lime pasteurization)?  And is peat moss necessary at all?  Thanks.

I believe garden lime is best because it is slow release... I think hydrated lime may get washed on a few waterings.
You could find that out if you have a soil pH meter!

The peat moss isn´t absolutely necessary.

Good luck,

reasearch cacti soil mixes very good before you make some

i use

humus
green sand
rock phosphate
fish meal
worm castings
cut it 50-50 with perlite and you are set to go

sometimes i use some coarse sand // regular sand or sand box sand is the worst stuff to use it makes it compact, kills roots and makes drainage worse.

if you just use compost and rocks you are leaving out some much needed nutrients/ it will work but why not try to make it as best as possible

also i use fish emulsion about every 3 weeks to a month

if you dont deal like making a mix then it is best just to buy cacti soil and mix it with a little perlite

I have a lot of desert varieties that really like basic soil. I just fill my cactus mix with some coarsely crushed limestone, since that's what I see the things growing in naturally anyhow.

I'd be afraid of using anything else without using a pH meter.
