I dunno. I expected the mom to be super-possessive and controlling, scared to let her kids live life at all. But she seemed to be doing it out of love and compassion, and she seemed pretty relaxed. The kids seemed OK too, a bit fixated but not in a super-creepy way. I can see doing it until 3, maybe even 4 years. 7 seems too old, and it's probably not the absolute best thing. But on the whole, they look pretty balanced.

I worked with some hippie lady who said she breast fed her son until he was 11. :eek:

Its very disturbing. There comes a time when breast feeding is more detrimental than beneficial and I'd say 5 years old is way past that line. Its not normal in our society for a child over the age of say 2 or so to suckle on their momma's teet for sustenance. Children older than that might actually remember it and be horribly traumatized by it. There's absolutely no reason that a child that old should still be drinking breast milk.

I tend to think that women who are for this practice secretly get off on it. And that sickens me even more.

In some Polynesian cultures it's the norm to breast feed until the age of five, because the child will give it up on their own. In western society we force it, which can cause stress and separation anxiety.
