The smell sounds about right. Pans don't smell like cubes. A friend of mine said the dried shrooms smell like ass. That's a pretty good description.

Pan mycelium looks wispy like cobweb when it comes up through the casing. I don't think it is possible for Pans to get overlay because the mycelium stays so wispy.

Here is the only picture I have that shows a casing, but its not real good. Maybe it will help. Sounds like you might be on the right track though.

I think dried shrooms smells like fish-food..
