poppie question
    #6698618 -

Hello everyone,

I just planted some poppy seeds that I have stored at less-than-optimal conditions for about 10 years. They havent been in bad conditions the whole time, just intermittently.

Anyway, my question is, can I expect anything to germinate, and if so, in what time frame.

Do they need light to germ?

thanks in advance,

carica

You'ld be far better off getting some fresh seeds! Poppy seeds are so easy to come by that I personaly wouldn't bother with 10 year old seeds. You might get some to germinate, but it will be a small percentage if any.
Poppies do require light to geminate. They should be scattered on the surface of the soil.

Thanks for the input. I figured the germ rate wouold be low, but I have a sort of emotional attachment to these seeds. I collected them in Thailand in 1996 in chiang mai, and I'd like to see at least some grow.

Anyone out there ever seen poppy seeds so old grow?

thanks

in the rare event that any seeds germinate, their quality will be poor. Even in the best conditions, seed quality is reduced fairly quickly

buy new seeds and start over

If you have quite a few, take a test batch of 100 seeds and place them on the surface of a moist paper towel. Place the towel in a ziplock so you can still see the seeds, keep it exposed to room light for a week +/-. you will be able to tell in this way if they are still viable.
Poppies don't transplant well, so don't expect to be able to plant your germination test seeds.
