Ahh....The Welfare System

So I'm a pretty rabid liberal. I generally think Conservatives are the bane of a civilized society, but in this one case, I think they may be right.

This girl Nikky is one of my good friends from high school. Now, I almost have my college degree, but I must say she isnt doing so well in life. She has two kids by this guy Joe we know from school. Joe barely works part time, and hasnt been able to hold down a real job in all the time I've known him. (5 Years?)

So they're on public assistance. Fine. I can understand that we as a society arent going to let her kids starve to death in the gutter. This is acceptable to me.

But she just moved into a "Rent Assisted" duplex. 20$ a month!! 20!

While I pay almost 600 to live in my apartment, w/ 2 roommates.

And she has enough money to support a pretty serious pill habit, and she just got a cell phone.

What. The. Fuck.

How can this system even work? Is there not some way that we can put an iron clamp on what these people can use this money for?

This whole thing is just outraegous to me. Why am I paying a shit-ton of taxes to support this high-school dropout baby factories pill-popping and cell-chatting?

This should be illegal.

I collect welfare. I am a poor bastard.

I got refused till my native girlfriend moved in with me and we applied together.

I live in Canada.. and we never get no $20 apartment. shit, we have nothing left after rent and food. Time to get a job, but I'm on hosue arrest.. so got to wait another 2 weeks.

I do not support welfare at all. But your notion that conservatives are the bane to civilized society is ill-conceived. You do not distinguish between constitutional conservatives of days long gone and the neo-conservatives of today. Clearly the former is what a civilized society needs.

i just wish there was a system that could logically screen the reason for need of assistance. such as beng a lazy peice of shit, or having to deal with some real legit problems and thus needing some help as long as you are helping yourself. of course there is no way in hell for that, but still...

my option would be supply them things to better their future. such as class or programs to increase their potential for making more money and getting on their own, instead of giving free money to do ass they please with, because as is obvious with most, they wherent really able to handle that freedom the first time around.

Exactly.

Like I say, I have no problem w/ giving her food for her kid. Or even helping her put a roof over its head.

But she doesnt NEED all this help. She is living a more lavish lifestyle than ME.

Those who stick with what the Constitution says. They respect states' rights and they stick with what is stated in Article 2, Section 8. I guess you can call them Libertarians in today's party terms.

Most other people i know that are on welfare are lazy winos/crackheads....

I collect a cheque because no one in the small town i lived in liked me enuff to hire me cause of my criminal antics...

i have worked plenty of jobs in other cities.. but i have never had a job in my home town, and when i came back i had no other options but collect a cheque..

i moved again recently, but unfortunately i had court for a very old offence and got house arrest.

I get paid to sit on my ass, but i am also unable to leave my home and seek work. the system is genuis.. (sarcasm)

You're not. Someone this irresponsible would be spending their money on pills and stupid shit like a cell phone, with or without financial assistance. You pay taxes so her kids don't starve.

It's not a system that's intended to actually change things. If it was it would emphasize things like job training, education, and financial responsibility, in addition to providing housing and food stamps.

do you know the correlation between Highschool GPA + SAT in regards to predicting how well someone will do in college?

My univeristy gave my stat teacher (head of department) tons of data on thousands of graduated students. he got their HS GPA, their SAT scores, and their final univeristy GPA. know teh correlation? 20%. that's all it predicts. why does everybody use it? because there isn't anything better.

There isn't anything better? I'm glad you're not the one calling the shots in our legislative bodies. There are better alternatives, like the ones stated in this thread. Are they in place? No. Does that mean there is nothing better out there than our failed welfare system? No.

theres obviously flaws with the programs you suggested - otherwise they would be in place. do i know the flaws? no.

but i think the hundreds-if-not-thousands of minds (that are far greater than most of ours) that work on this problem everyday probably would've figured out a solution by now if there was one that was logical, applicable and effective.
