Has anyone here read the novel Grendel (Beowulf from the monster's point of view)?

i read it a looong time ago (9th or 10th grade) after reading beowulf in a bad old-english(-ish) version (which i hated). i think it was a mastery, if only for the "history of the defeated" aspect. but, it was also really interesting for the dialogue and the "explaining of self" aspect (think: notes from underground, same "justification" of self, in a way... ). but its been a while, and perhaps not as good as i once thought it was? i hope it is, though.

If you like the whole Beowulf thing, check out Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead, recently made into a movie called The Thirteenth Warrior. (They may have renamed the book too)
It's the story of Beowulf from an Arab who travels to the Norse lands and participates in the tale.

I own Grendel; it's most certainly worth reading, especially if you enjoy the story of Beowulf. John Gardner presents such a unique perspective on a age-old tale, which combined with his intense and insightful diction on the behalf of the monster Grendel makes for, in my opinion, a very worthwhile read.
I also have Eaters of the Dead, and while it may not match Grendel for literary value, I found it entertaining, especially when compared to the original story of Beowulf.
