New tek Idea, any possibility this will work?
    #667200 - 06/07/02 08:30 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, so say I were to take some of those ziplock disposable rubbermaid containers, and mix up some brf/verm and put it in there. Cover it with a microwave safe plastic like part of an oven bag or something , push it down a little put some verm on top of the plastic then put the lid on and put some tape around where lid meets the container. Poke four holes in the lid. Throw this container in the microwave long enough to sterlize it, let it cool and innoculate.

I see no reasons why it wouldn't, but I'm no where even close to an expert in this field. I'll probably try doing this no matter what feedback I get. Please give me your opinions though, I wanna know if this will work. My goal with this is to colonize it in the same container I'd case it in so I could just pull off that plastic layer with the verm on top and then just add my casing layer, which will probably be 50/50 (coir/verm).

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I've tried the same thing that you described, and after about a week, it got contaminated with some really foul-smelling crap. Give it a try, hope it works out for you.

I think it will work, if you keep everything sterile and dont let it dry out.

Thanks for the input so far. Any suggestions on how to improve on any of my ideas would also be greatly appreciated. I only have expiernce with mycobags so far and wanted to find a really newbie friendly way to grow without having to use a pressure cooker. I also was wondering how well microwave sterilization works? I have access to a few pressure cookers and some although limited access to a couple large autoclaves, but would rather not mess with those just yet.

I would put polyfill in the holes of the lid so it can breathe.

Ive tried that idea a few times...
i think the verm has metalic properties cause everytime i microwaved it the substrate turned into a brick of concreat.
try pressure cooking it, or boiling.

if it fails, oven it, but i donno if ziplock bags melt in ovens @ +300 degrees
give it a try.

The shrewmen did a search for microwave tek, but then thought, why are they doing this guy's research? Do a search and you'll realize it would be silly to use a microwave when you have access to a pc. And about casing in the same container you colonize... seems kinda pointless.

2shrewmen,

Was wondering why you think casing in the same container would be pointless??

It would be very beneficial IMO because 1. you don't even have to touch it, risking it to unnecessary contams, and 2, wouldn't have to break up the established mycelium, therefore allowing for faster pinning time.

How do you propose one go about PC'ing a tupperware plastic container??

Well, casing is meant to increase your yield by spreading out the substrate in a larger container, creating a larger area for shrooms to grow. If you case in the same container, you aren't doing this, and may as well just grow cakes. Right?

for microwave sterilization i have heard of people having success by putting your container with the substrate on a microwavable pan with a small amount of water in it, i guess this may prevent the substrate from drying out too much?
