Blood Meal And Coco Coir/
    #6681232 -

Okay question for the vets...

So Im about to pasteurize some Coco coir in some pillow cases(not nuking it because of the amount). Im going to use it as substrate. Anyways I was wondering, do I add the blood meal before or after I pasteurizing, and how much do I add. The blood meal I have says it has 12% Nitrogen by the way...

I quit using it after several side by side tests revealed zero change in growth characteristics. Blood meal might help to heat up a compost pile, but apparently the mushrooms have little use for it when not composted. For pasteurizing in the pillow case method, I'd suggest about 5% by volume of bagged composted chicken manure from a nursery, or any amount of spent coffee grinds you have. If you drink coffee, empty your spent grinds every day into a tub where you can spread them out to dry. Once dry, they won't mold. This way, when you make up a batch of substrate, you'll have them available.

I thought the point of blood meal was to increase potency, not growth....

And about this cofee thing, what are the benefits of using spent cofee? Never heard of using it before. Does Expresso work? Im Cuban, people only drink that crack liquid cofee around here... :smirk:

Unfortunately, people are free to type whatever they wish, so those kind of myths get passed on down the line and repeated until people think they're true. My experiments over many years have shown potency not to be related to the substrate, provided you've given the mycelium what it needs to grow and produce fruits. A proper substrate, whether it's manure, coir, straw, cased grains, or even pf cakes will all produce potent mushrooms, provided you have a good fruiting strain. Potency is genetics related, not substrate, and trust me, I've used a lot of substrates and additives to try to find a correlation. There simply isn't one.

Well actually Im aware of the ongoing debate concerning substrate and potency, but I think the last statement I read by Agar on the subject makes more sence.

Agar said. (not exact words)
"Potency is determind by a mix of all three of these factors Genetics, Enviroment, Substrate.......

Maybe susbstate is not the key factor, but I wouldnt dismiss the fact that it is a factor.

Grrrr........ Now I don't know what to do.... I have 16 quart jars and 3 bricks of Coco Coir....

RR said.....

"Blood meal is high in nitrogen, but is totally unusable to fungi unless it is applied in the composting process, which most home mushroom growers do not do. The use of blood meal added to manure or coir is a waste of resources and actually encourages algae to form on the surface of the substrate or casing layer, leading inexperienced growers to throw out a perfectly fine project thinking they have 'green mold'."

Sigh....

I still am reluctant about spawning to coir by itself without giving it a boost somehow... Can coir really be to par with manure just as it is?

I have never added anything to coir except coffee grounds and have never seen a difference in potency, poo will continue to flush longer that coir but potency is the same

Please note that I did NOT dismiss it as a factor.

Potency is genetic the way intellegence is in humans. If Einstein had starved all his life, I doubt he would have turned out the work he did, and I'm sure george bush has never skipped a meal in his life, but . . .
