Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

I've been listening to it all day and think it's pretty damn good. with favorite songs being: invisible, people as places as people (that one especially), spitting venom, we've got everything, missed the boat, Florida, parting of the sensory.

it's available on torrents for those who want it. much better then good news, I'm quite impressed with many of the songs, it's the old modest mouse i used to love. check it out if your a modest mouse fan, amazing CD.

I used to listen to some of their older stuff but I kind of wondering away from that band

I'd say this album is easily my third favorite mm album, I'd put it up there with lonesome crowded west and the moon and antarctica.

I always hesitate to choose favorite albums but Moon & Antarctica is very likely mine.  I just finished giving the new album a roll and I say  :thumbup:.  Invisible, We've Got Everything, Parting of the Sensory and Dashboard are :thumbup::thumbup:.  It's a little poppier then their norm, with more driving beats reminiscent of Cure or Killers

Pardon the bringing up a 3-month-old thread, but I'm bordering obsession with this one currently.
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank may not be my favorite album by Modest Mouse, but it's easily their best, in terms of growth, depth, and general musicianship.  I'm a total sucker for concept albums as is, but I think this one may easily be the greatest concept that I've heard done.  If you've ever read the book Moby Dick, you'll certainly note the influence on the concept.... the captain rowing his crew out to death.  In this album/story, the captain is God.  And the way that they stick to it is impressive.  It's almost like a story, progressing chronologically, although it never quite goes anywhere... which also ties in with the complexity of the album, since some of it has to do with just that - ending where we begin.
Parting of the Sensory is surely the best song on this album, and maybe the best song they've ever written, lyrically at least.  Kind of a Cowboy Dan feel, but more in-depth and a broader view.  The two lines "Dehydrate back into minerals/ A life-long walk to the same exact spot" sum up alot of the idea behind it.  It's essentially a cynical viewpoint of life... how there's "No work in walking in.." and you're "Never walking away from.." You're just here.  And you won't be much longer.  There's no point in it, beautiful as it may be, other than ending where you begun.  And it's going to take you your whole life, just to do that.  And it's never-ending.  And the song really captures the feel of that idea, the beat is just constant, steady, seemingly never-ending.  The song's central icon is carbon, the chemical element that occurs in every living thing.  The chorus sings "Carbon's anniversary/The parting of the sensory", speaking of birth and death.  And the last minute or so goes "Someday you will die and somehow something's gonna steal your carbon/Someday someone or something will die and you will steal it's carbon" on and on, over and over. 
Every song on this album is gold.  I don't feel like reviewing every song's ideas, but anyhow I highly, highly recommend this album to everyone.  "We Were Dead..." is easily my top favorite so far this year.  It has me going through the entire Modest Mouse catalog again after all this time. They're one of the greats.  It's the way they give you the idea, and let you spell it out.  These guys are true artists, and it shines on this album.  Way to fucking go.
Apologies again, didn't mean to write a review, but I just can't stop hearing this. :thumbup:
