Incorporating Tyvek/polyfill into a fruiting chamber
    #6649623 -

What would you say about stuffing some polyfill in the tip of this?

[That was the best way for me to illustrate my point]

I beleive that it would be pointless. The gas isn't going to just float out so a hole in the top with pollyfill is useles. UNLESS you have a hole in the top and want to filter what falls in.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the basic fruiting chamber here:

As far as I can tell, the concept is to cover it with something clear and to leave it uncovered just enough so a tiny amount of air can enter/escape (because you can't have it completely sealed--even with periodical fannings).

Using Tyvek/polyfill would allow for more air exchange while still keeping in the humidity...and there would be NO completely bare openings--it would be just Tyvek/polyfill, so that would greatly reduce contams. The only air entering the fruitaing chamber would be air that passed through the Tyvek/polyfill!

Example:

Cut a hole in the side of that bucket and patch it with a layer of Tyvek

Better yet, punch holes and don't cover with tyvek. The more air the better. It's a common mistake to think fruiting chambers need filters. Colonizing jars need filters, FC's don't, and they actually slow down the air exchange, leading to contamination.

So, fully-colonized cakes are virtually immune to contaminants?

Yes virtually  Until they get older and the sub gets more acidic.

I fan the frickin crap out of my monotubs with little fear of contams.

Choice of fresh air or filters.. Id take fresh air, as long as humidity is up! Mold doesnt like fresh air to much

so then how do you keep in the humidity with a bunch of drill holes on the chamber, it would leave through the holes.
