duel tub fruiting chamber construction question.

Hey folks AFOAF is building a rubbermaid tub inside of a tub fruiting chamber for his edible mushrooms. After putting the whole thing together, and placing the water in the first tub, he saw that the tub on the inside is floating. Is the tub on the inside supposed to float, or should he weigh it down or something, so that the water line is pushed up around the inside tub's walls?

That's fine. Just test the setup empty and you'll see. Where are your holes for gas exchange? This guy I know found that to have the holes as close to the casing as possible means of pushing the walls of the outer bin away from those of the inner became necessary (so he thinks). He bought some plastic practice golf balls and created a good gap that way.

Couldn't he have just made the hole go through both bins? Maybe I'm missing something.

My friend doesn't have his floating...his water level is below the botom of his inner tub.  this way it also makes a good seal to keep the heat in....works for him.... :confused:

He uses the outer bins as an incubator and does not like wasting duct tape. But yeah, is that what you did?

If you make the hole for the tube go through both bins.....when you what to adjust the temp or check the water level (when you lift off the top (inner bin)) you would have to unplug your tube...or have an extra 3-4 feetof tube hangin out Which in my eyes is a pain in the a$$. My friend just has the hole for the tube near the top on the side so the inner tub is an individual...and can be move about whenever he wants.

The aquarium heater teq is just a teq for raising the temperature....my dog  uses the teq to raise the tempurature of his fruiting chamber....that's all....but is his case he use and aquarium air pump to semi_automate the air exchanges....which includes tubes....that's what the hell i'm talkin about.....like Dank said whatever works. Works! :smirk:

The guy has his tube through the upper part of the bin and run down the wall inside. I guess what I was talking about were the holes through which the co2 escapes (six 1" diameter holes stuffed w/ polyfill in each of the guy's inner bins). He uses two of the three outer bins as an incubation setup for spawn jars. I like the sealed approach, w/ two bins tight together, though.

I use a tub in tub fruiting chamber. The RH is 93%, the water temp is 86f and the temp in the chamber is 79F. For air exchange I have 9 one inch holes on the top covered with tyvek and I fan it.

Yeah :grin:. Have you ever tried filling it w/ poop. It's very nice to have colonization conditions convert to fruiting by the change of a lid and the addition of a tube.

is your house really cold or something? cause you want the fruiting temp to be lower than the incubation temp.

My dog lives in the in the Basement...it's about 69 F down there.    Are that many vent holes needed?  He has one hole 1/2 inch in diameter.....the same size as the inlet of his pump.....he figures... if it goes in.....it must go out.....I understand pressure...and now that I think about it....the more outlets the easier it is on the pump.....which would equal longer life for the pump....but there is space between the lid and the base.....because it's not air tight.....He's only a dog....maybe I'll let him know that you guys are using that many outlets.....and let him make up his mind...Thanks :grin:

Sorry I've been away from the post folks, but I want to run a couple ideas past ya, to make sure my FOAF's plan of construction will work....


They plan to place one tub in another tub, after filling the first tub with water. They intend to let the inside tub float, because the temp of the fruiting chamber only needs to about 10 degrees warmer for colonization. They wont even need any extra heating for the fruiting. With generous use of H2O2 to avoid cob mold that has pledged them will be avoided. Perlite will provide the RH needed, and They'll use a filtered air pump set twice a day, set for 10 mins. for air exchange.

Any comments about this approach?

My frogs got his air pump running 24/7 and it's still not enough for max conditions....check this post.

With that much air exchange, how is the RH kept up, or will it not be a problem?

It's not a problem to keep the humidity up.....my mouses is  at 100% ...his problem is going to be.....how to get it down to 85% when he tries casings :confused:
