I got a painting stand and art set for Christmas. I've never been good a drawing, but I find painting easier and I have been painting allot as of late.
But, I'm already 25, and while I am quite happy with my musical abilities, some times I look at paintings done by Alex Grey, or Salvidor Dali, and I think... What's the point, I will NEVER be that good.
But I do enjoy it, and I am trying to get better. I've even downloaded some books to help me.
So who here paints??? (and what the hell, who here draws??) Any advice for people who SUCK?

I've been known to grab a can of One -Shot and a Pinstriping brush.

I've also been known to help out with a car or two:

not quite the same but it still takes a ton of color theory and a natural eye to make a car look right.
and Pinstriping,hah...thats about the hardest thing to be proficient at with a brush.

That's pretty nice. I worked in my cousins auto body shop for years, helping the painter. One of the nicer jobs that I've had without a doubt. And yes allot of work goes into a good paint job.

I've always wanted to get more into the painting side, but i jsut don't have that eye for it. So i sit and build them.
The Pinstriping I've been trying so hard for years now,and i still suck, it's possibly the hardest hobby like thing i've ever done. The symetry, the design, line thickness, paint viscosity, blah blah...it just takes years and years...But!...you can use it for regular painting as the best touch up brush ever, most people dont paint in lead based One-Shot though.

That last pic is fucking sick.
I know what you mean about symmetry. Only nature and computers seem to do that with ease. It's fucking real hard to paint something symmetrical.

You mustn't look at it as a contest. Art is one of the purest forms of personal expression; it's not about "talent". If you want to do some visual art, the sky's the limit. Experiment, fool around, make mistakes, evaluate your work, decide what you find aesthetically pleasing; and don't overthink things. Just let is flow from the deepest place within yourself. I do a bit of visual art (mostly photo-based) as a hobby. If I got obsessed with "comparing" my artwork to that of the great masters it would stifle my creativity and undermine the whole point in creating art in the first place: free expression.

i like to paint a lot..... i am not that awesome or anything but as land crab said it isn't about that. its kind of like a whole journey you go through where you have your ups and downs and its really awesome to watch the peace unfold in front of your eyes. my girlfriend is really good so its nice to have her around for advice. when i paint a lot i get so much better.. so i would say just keep doing it man.... 25 isn't shit you can paint until you die... you should try to post some pics...

I'm not that good at painting. I'm mainly into drawing. There's a guy I know who's teaching me how to do screenprinting, so hopefully soon I'll have some of my drawings put on fabric(I already have some of them inked onto my skin).

I paint. I use oil paint wet on wet style, the same style as Bob Ross (the guy w/ the afro). I can do landscapes and stuff fine but w/ that style you can't really do portraits and things to well.
