You mean like art paintings?
That's a big subject with a lot of answers depending on what kind of painting, how big it is, how valuable it is, it's current condition, how long you want to store it, etc.
Generally, you don't want them to get wet, poked, or dirty. It's good to keep them away from UV light as well, like direct sunlight.
I just store mine in custom racks in my studio; protected from light, dirt and moisture. If I have to ship them, then I make a custom crate out of plywood and 1x2s.
You can also make some custom cardboard boxes that are pretty effective. I used to take corrugated cardboard and make a kind of cardboard plywood out of it, by using spray glue and a vacuum press to adhere sheets of cardboard together with the direction of corrugation in each layer running perpendicular to the direction of the corrugation in the previous layer. You can then construct a pretty sound box out of it with strips of wood for a frame, and then then pad the inside with some of that wavy/bumpy foam cushioning.
Those suggestions are for stretched and framed canvases. If they are un-stretched canvas, or if you don't mind taking them out of the frame and un-stretching them, then you can roll up the canvases and store them in cardboard tubes; you can also ship them this way. I try and avoid this however, as every time you un-stretch and re-stretch a canvas you change the stress between the pigment layers and the canvas, and this can ultimately damage to the painting.
I don't know. It's complicated. There are people who's entire college education and career revolves around issues like this. I've had several friends over the years that were art consevators. Like I said, it depends on a lot of issues.
Also, in answer to your question, they do make airtight boxes, and there are outfits that can custom make such boxes, but that's only really warranted with very valuable paintings, or paintings that have serious conservation issues.
