Am I a nasty bastard?

I saw my mother today and we had a discussion about what happened at xmas which resulted in her telling me I'm a nasty bastard.

I thought I was a reasonably nice guy, so I will let the shroomery decide...

Heres the details:
At xmas I didn't participate much in the small talk. I did the usual 'how are you?' & 'what you been up too?' with all the family then got a little bored of the continueing small talk and put 1 ear phone in. Participating in conversation when anything interesting came up.

Interesting for me is anything out of the norm. Not repeating the same conversations we have every week about the weather...

Anyway, my mum was driving and after about 8 hours of this xmas stuff I asked her if we could go or were we gonna just chat bubbles all night. Thats my precise words.

I thought that was just being honest but my mother has informed me that it was rude. When I said it was honest, I was told I'm a nasty bastard!

So, I let the shroomery decide...
Does saying that on xmas, make me a nasty bastard?

You demonstrate lack of empathy...your mom might be boring to you but shes your mom for fucks sake, her life is the life of an older woman, she's not going to talk to you about shrooms and stuff, for one day a year you should indulge her, or at least take some interest in her and give a little back instead of just taking all the time.

I know the feeling, I used to get that feeling of infuriating boredom and dullness with my family when I was (surprise) an adolescent but unless you are a nasty bastard you learn that you cant be selfish.

even though you were just being honest, that's kind of a jerk off type of approach to attending a family reunion. you have to realize that most everyone is trying their best to get everyone talking and feeling comfortable. sometimes you have to make small talk. you can't just talk about science and politics the whole time...that gets kind of boring too. and if you really want to have an interesting conversation you might have to initiate it yourself rather than wait for someone else to start it. if everyone just took your approach then you'd all just be sitting there with earphones on the whole time.

i know what you're talking about though. family reunions can be a little redundant and uncomfortable sometimes, but sometimes they can be fun too. you just got to keep trying to participate. that's just my view on the whole subject.

but no, i don't think that makes you a "nasty bastard" just honest and maybe a little rude.

Almost all talk is meaningless, empty and stupid... Those moments when it gets even more empty and meaningless i feel like going postal on everyone around me..

IMO You are not a nasty bastard in this in this instance.

You were apparently bored/bleh whatever, and your mum doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humour.

Talk bubbles?  I've never heard that before, but it seems like a much nicer way of saying 'hey, are we going to continue bullshitting each other or actually talk?'  So no, I don't think you were a nasty bastard.  :smirk:

I have come to the conclusion just now we are all assholes, but when a parent calls their child something like that, its low. You may be an asshole like me, but youre not a nasty bastard.

after 8 hours around family...i consider that to be quite mild
