Expedition Borneo

it's on Discovery Channel right now. Who else is watching? Basically a group of scientists are exploring the jungles in search of endangered things to try and save the rain forest.

I've been seeing commercials for it but didn't plan on watching... I'm really glad I caught it. I would love the chance to do something like that one day.

I was in Malaysian Borneo a couple of months ago. The logging situation there is dire. We'd drive through endless oil palm plantations, literally nothing but neat rows of palm trees for hundreds of kilometres. It's not the wild, romantic adventurer's paradise of headhunters and orangutans that it used to be. All the unique animals, as well as the native people are being squeezed out of their traditional homes thanks to the government's greed. The Malaysian government has got to be up there with the worst when it comes to allowing rampant destruction of forests. They should think about that when they bitch about Thailand (who has banned logging since the late 80s) getting all the tourists.

At least the few patches of jungle that are left are still beautiful, saw loads of wildlife include a single wild orang-utan, for a brief but magical two minutes! I'll look our for that show next time it's on.

How long were you there?

The whole point of the show is to try and save the forest. The showed some of the plantations and logging but are mostly focusing on the endangered animals and unexplored caves and things. They are trying to connect all of the little preserves into one really large one.

I spent a month in Sabah and Sarawak. It's still one of the best places I've ever been - definitley wanna see this show!
