depends on the distro and what you're running. I have ubuntu and it is pretty responsive. programs rarely if ever crash. if I turn on beryl (eye candy) it slows some things down, like resizing windows, but other wise it's good.

Luke you wouldn't want to run Linux. You'd bitch about not being able to find the software you want.

I'm sure taht by now a bunch of Linuxes out there can run just about any Windows program by some means. I mean, Linux is good enough for Windows, isn't it?

Linux and windows are totally different file systems and it's like saying black is the same as white.

Linux can not nativrly run windows software. It can be emulated in some cases. But windows isn't even in the same ball park as linux.

That's what I meant: emulation

I would assume that emulation has been well-developed for Linux

Emulating isn't an efficient way of running anything. An emulator is basically software that can act as a virtual pc(or virtual linux system). Microsoft developed their own emulator for mac that was a piece of shit. It was called Virtual PC, image that.

Years ago I was able to emmulate the mac os on a pc. It was terribly slow but I did put the mac os 10.2 at the time, on a windows machine. This is emmulation. Emmulation occurs while the native os is running but is also emmulating another os. This is why it is terribly innefficient.

It basically adapts the native file system to "look" like a pc file stystem so software doesn't have to be rewritten to work on a non windows environment.

Now the new intel macs that are linux based file systems can natively run windows programs. But this can only be done AFTER an NTFS partition has been made, so it makes the mac a pc, essentially. BUT the new OS X 10.5 that is coming out is suppose to be able to run windows programs simultaniously ontop of the existing mac os. This is a huge breakthrough, but we will see how well it works when it comes out.

no body bitches when they have UBUNTU , but honestly if you want a linux distro that would give you your " good ol' windows xp " bullshit appeal , then check out freespire.
its a Linspire based distro that runs a GNOME enviorment. as opposed to the also bullshit KDE desktop.
want pretty fucked with functionality ? try ubuntu
