BRITAIN'S chief police officers today issued a warning to companies, organizations and the public over the letter bomb scare.

They revealed that seven postal devices had been received in the last three weeks, with six people suffering minor injuries.

The third letter bomb in as many days on motoring related companies has increased suspicions that they are linked.


The latest blast happened in the post room of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in Swansea, South Wales Police said.

One woman sustained minor burns and two other women have sustained hearing-related injuries.

Yesterday, a package exploded at the offices of an accountancy firm linked to Speed Check Services, the provider of digital speed cameras to the police.

That followed a letter bomb attack the day before at the central London offices of Capita, which runs London’s congestion charge system.

It also emerged today that a letter bomb exploded in Kent at the weekend.

The device went off at a residential address in Folkestone on Saturday, the home of a 53-year-old man, Kent Police said.

Kent Police said officers were examining any potential similarities between Saturday’s letter bombing and this week’s incidents in London, Berkshire and Swansea.

A spokesman said it was “too early” to say whether the events were linked.

The latest attack appears to confirm fears that an enraged motorist is mounting a daily letter bomb campaign.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said a woman had been injured in “a small letter-type explosion” at around 9.23am and taken to hospital.

She is the fourth person to be injured by a device sent through the post this week.

Thames Valley Police are understood to be leading the investigation into the letter bomb campaign and have appointed a senior investigating officer to work with the other police forces involved.

Scotland Yard’s counter terrorism unit is investigating Monday’s blast.

South Wales Police said today: “Police are in attendance following an incident at the DVLA offices in Swansea, where a small explosion has been reported.

“One female has been taken to hospital with injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. A cordon has been put in place and nearby residents are being evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“Emergency services remain at the scene as further investigation is carried out"
