Drug Speech - Please help =]
    #6520985 -

I have to stand up in front of my class and give a speech regarding a controversial subject, and I picked psychedelics. Please proof read and offer as much constructive criticism as possible. Thanks!

"I am 100 percent in favor of the intelligent use of drugs, and 1,000 percent against the thoughtless use of them, whether caffeine or LSD. And drugs are not central to my life", Timothy Leary stated regarding the controversy surrounding the experimental use of psychedelics. Not only do I agree with this quote, but so do several other scientists who research psychedelics. Scientific experiments from all over the world now support evidence that intelligent use of psychedelics can yield several unusual benefits, including, greatly reducing severe compulsions for people who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, aborting cluster head ache periods, and extending cluster head ache remissions. Still to this day, people are uninformed about the positive results that psychedelics produce when used thoughtfully.
Several scientific documents and media outlets, including MSNBC Online, state that the consumption of fungus containing psilocybin, greatly reduces severe compulsion for those who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. After the consumption of psilocybin containing fungus, psilocybin is quickly converted to psilocin, which then acts as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor in the brain, where it mimics the effects of serotonin. Scientists report one patient's symptoms went into remission for more than six months, according to News Target. If scientific research has proven this to be true, then why are the sufferers of OCD still having to consume synthetic chemicals that in most cases, only minimize the symptoms.
There are several other scientific proven benefits of psychedelics.ClusterBusters, a therapy web site for those who suffer from cluster headaches, states that substantial evidence proves that serotonergic psychedelics, or psychedelics which effect serotonin in the brain, abort cluster headache periods and extend remission periods. One serotonergic psychedelic includes lysergamide, which can be found in several different types of seeds sold at any local plant store. Both Morning Glory and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds contain this controlled psychedelic, however extraction of lysergamide is against the law. I don't understand why something as easy as placing the seed in a glass of water for 30 minutes, which is entirely natural, and which has been proven to help those who suffer from the hell of cluster head aches, is against the law. I fail to see the logical side of any law prohibiting the intelligent use of a natural seed, which has been used by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago.
Several research web sites, including Hallucinogens Online, state that Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago. Before Francis' death, he told a fellow scientist that he often used small doses of LSD to boost his powers of thought. He said it was LSD that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize. Other famous, intelligent scientists have experimented with LSD including Albert Hoffman and former Harvard professor, Timothy Leary. Although researchers are allowed to study LSD with a special license, possession by others is a felony. I understand that without the prohibition of such a powerful psychedelic, there will always be people who thoughtlessly abuse, but the same goes with any firearm.
I am in no way against the experimental, and thoughtful use of drugs, however I am totally against the abusive use of drugs. I see great potential in the constructive use of psychedelics, and hopefully one day others will also see the alternate angle. Any substance can be abused, even caffeine. It's totally based on whether the drug is in an intelligent persons hands, or in the hands of a weak minded individual who decides to abuse.

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I read the first paragraph, and while you seem to have some material good to use, you're wording is horrible, just to be honest.

Thanks for the links =]

While I agree that the top paragraph is a bit choppy, I fail to see how the whole wording of the speech is horrible. If you could point out specific areas I would appreciate it. This is my first attempt at a speech, thanks.

you do not capture your audience , you have within the first 2 sentences to really entrance an audience.
if you honestly want to spruce up your word choice without being pretentiously literate whilst helping your overall presentation make an attempt to watch older films of Hitler & his speeches.

furthermore , the jargon used is sporadic. ...jumping from casual to robotic ,if you will.
SPEAK to the audience-
-"which then acts as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor in the brain, where it mimics the effects of serotonin."
this isnt speaking, this is reverberation.( mainly due to your terseness on the subject.[IE what is serotonin?])
- refrain from using words with negative implications( the speech is about breaking barriers , not about reaffirming)..for most, the word " drug " is fairly loaded...try substance's , or sacrament.

You definitely hit on some good points regarding the medical use of psychedelics.  A couple phrases I might consider rewording would be:
  • "'I am 100 percent in favor of the intelligent use of drugs, and 1,000 percent against the thoughtless use of them, whether caffeine or LSD. And drugs are not central to my life', Timothy Leary stated regarding the controversy surrounding the experimental use of psychedelics."

I'm not so sure about this opening quote.  It reads a bit awkwardly to me, but on the other hand as this seems to be an oral presentation - you should be able to sell Leary's words with some solid acting..  I can see it workin' out, so long as you stay animated and make it clear from the get-go that you are opening with a quote (use a modified voice, dropping into your standard tone when you get to the narrative).

  • "I fail to see the logical side of any law prohibiting the intelligent use of a natural seed, which has been used by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago."

I don't like seeing such blatent and all-encompassing dismissal of another perspective.  Most people who listen to your speech will not be able to sympathize with failing to see any logic behind the laws in action today.  There does seem to be at least poor logic for prohibition, when one considers the irresponsible side of drug use.  Of course, recognizing that prohibition isn't going to make a drug magically disappear (nor make disappear people's interest in such substances), there are better ways to go about fostering positive social change - such as legalization, regulation and education.  I would rewrite this line as follows:
I fail to see much logic in prohibiting the public use of a natural seed, one that has been used ritually by human cultures for centuries, notably the Aztecs of Central Mexico.

  • "Other famous, intelligent scientists have experimented with LSD including Albert Hoffman and former Harvard professor, Timothy Leary."

Albert Hoffman deserves distinction as the discoverer of LSD while in Switzerland, working for the reputable Sandoz Laboratories in 1943.  Ya needn't include all that in note, but give the guy his credit where credit is due :yesnod:

  • "I understand that without the prohibition of such a powerful psychedelic, there will always be people who thoughtlessly abuse, but the same goes with any firearm."

The analogy toward our right to bear arms sounds very strange and I don't think it lends much support to your argument in favor of legalizing psychedelics; and alluding to the rates of drug abuse increasing "without prohibition" is just nuts!  I would axe that line and try to incorporate the following sentiments into your conclusion:
The legislation prohibiting drug use does not serve any positive, social, change. Quite the contrary in fact - as now all these people who seek their drugs of choice have to obtain them from an unregulated, criminal source.  No law is going to make a drug disappear, and so long as there is a demand, there will be a supply.  With all the potential I see for responsible psychedelic use, I hope that one day more people will come to remember the lessons of the 1920's -- that prohibition simply does not work!

All in all I enjoy the focus of your presentation and I think it would be pretty awesome to orate such a spiel to the crowd!

Also an interesting note there about Francis Crick and his LSD adventures.  I was not aware of that.

So.. now that I've given comment on yours, you gotta comment on mine!

(..look what you got yourself into) :smirk:

Yeah.

I had to reread the first few sentences multiple times. Not good, especially for a speech.

Just clean it up...ALL OF IT.

It's somewhat informative, but very dry and does not hook me. Get rid of the technical speak, like reason was saying. You have to assume, especially in your case, that your audience knows nothing of your subject. You must educate them but you must not confuse them at the same time.

Well, I agree with the above posters - it needs cleaning up. And remember that your audience may not be as well informed about certain things as you are.
