I'm thinking about doing stand-up.

I've  been told by so many people I should consider trying out stand-up comedy.  Not as a career, by any means, because I know how hard it is to find steady work but I'd love to go out and see what I could do.  I love making people laugh...it's almost a secret personal life's mission.  I can do voices...almost any voice I hear.  It's like a parrot, I have to train my vocal cords to match the sounds but it comes out sounding extremely accurate.  I can almost do a complete Family Guy skit with most of the characters.  Nothing gets me off more than a room full of people laughing at jokes and impressions I'm doing; I get such a high from it.

Enough rambling though...What does it take to get a small 5-10 minute segment, and where can I do it?  I'm finally old enough to go out to the bars...I figured I'd start with an easier (drunk) audience :lol:  I dunno, if anyone out there has any tips please send them my way.  :laugh:

on stage to do their act..

I'm in the burbs of philly though...I have yet to see a comedy club around. I guess if I put together something decent I'll take it to the city but for now I'm stuck with bars and coffee houses (if they even have standup acts)

I actually took a class... not on how to be funny, but on how to get ibnto the clubs and how to write your material. It was fun, and I ended up doing a few sets in the burbs of Philly. :smile:

I forget where, but it was down I95, past the airport... Some sports bar that had Comedy nights.

I would love to get into comedy, but it's something that may never make a penny, and even if you do, it'll be a long time before you see anything decent... So, I sit here 9 hours a day, dying inside.

The class may still be offered at Camden County Community College, but I doubt it... It was $90 well spent! The 'teacher' wrote a nice manual with some interesting points, and it really did help to organize the material in a certain way... And the #1 rule, I'll share...

Comedy has a rule of THREEs... It sounds kinda dumb, but it works. Start by making simple jokes that flow in 3 parts...

Setup line.
Setup line.
Joke.

That helps the timing, and it really does work. Also when you make funny observations, try to have 2 setups in front of it. Like...

I love the Internet, my favorite sites are Google, Yahoo and AmputeeFetish.com.

That 1, 2, 3 punch makes writing jokes easier, pads your time and produces decent timing. the rest is up to you!

How far outside Philly are you? If you find something, I might be interested in getting back into it...

That's my natural style, I like building the joke with supporting details then BAM, it hits em like a ton of bricks.  It's also more fun to watch for me, I love the comics that start telling a story, which is funny in itself, then a few lines later they drop a huge punchline to sum it all up.  :lol: 

Anyway, I'm about a half hour outside of philly if the roads were empty.  I'm in pottstown so it's a hike during rush hour.

I happen to find Mitch Hedberg very funny. He laughed at his own jokes before he even said them.

Ok I'll put some of my thoughts together into a pseudo-routine and I'll post some of it next time I'm at the pops' house (no computer yet).  I'm pretty swamped with work and school too but if people are interested I'll definitely deliver :thumbup: :laugh: 

Here's a little preview:

"Having been in some pretty serious relationships I've learned a few things you just can't do around a girl that you do alone.  Example 1, the shower.  Guys you know how it is when you're all lathered up and it's time to rinse it all off.  You get down to your balls and what do you do?  You arch forward and pretty much turn your nutsack into a parachute as you try to rinse it off.  Now it's ass time, so you turn around, stick your ass out, and stand there holding your cheeks open until you're positive there's no soap left.

Try doing that with a girl.  Shower's are great for sex, great for a quick rinse, but that's where it stops.  I found myself in a very awkward position...we just fucked, she's already clean, I'm lathered all the way up and I need to rinse.  I turn to the stream and I'm about to make my nutsack parachute when...I realize how retarded my shower routine will look in front of my girlfriend.  There's no way I'm about to hold my ass cheeks open and arch forward with my hot, sexy, dripping wet girlfriend staring straight into my eyes.  I went home that night farting out Irish Spring."

I have all the movements and everything to go along with it too, it think will be a lot of fun :laugh:

Stand-up is probably one of the hardest jobs, but fuck it man, ya gotta go for your dreams. You'll regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did.  :laugh:


I can come up with some pretty funny shit myself, skits and shit....SNL/Monty Python style. I usually don't do it in front of mad people though.

Write your stuff down, whenever I come up with something thats actually really funny I write it down. I'm up to about 2 hours solid of what, I  IMO, would consider solid material.

No one wants to see lame filler comics, go for the gold boy! If its not that funny, don't use it. It might take more time, but do you want to be like Bill Hicks, or some douche from Justforlaughs you will forget about when you fall asleep.
