Re: my aquariums! [Re: G a n j a]

I've got a fifty-five gallon tank that has nothing but water and rocks in it, since my oscars went blind and died.

I'm still trying to decide what to do with it. I was thinking to get a lot of interesting plants and like one or two small, colorful fish, and some shrimp, or something. I was also thinking about getting a single oscar (its only big enough for one), or perhaps some big rocks and five or six cichlids.

I think I appreciated my tank more when it was just ten gallons and I had a lot of different, small fish in it. Of course, back then I didn't know shit and the oscars got bigger and killed all of the fish. The idea of having a small ecosystem in there intrigues me, which is why I think I should go the plant route, with some community fish and such.

Any suggestions? The rock in there right now is blue, that standard gravel that you get anywhere, and I'm thinking I want to lose it, get something that is more realistic. I'm assuming I will need a plant light... how does one keep algae out while supporting the life of the plants?

i like it...but i'll just give one opinion...

i say ditch the river stones and go for a smaller substrate....if you'll leave the front bare with no plants, maybe replace it with sand? i dunno, it looks fine as it is as well

fireworks: i say with a 55 gallon, go nuts with it...

i'd suggest getting a school of smaller fishes...like rasboras or tetras...to me it just looks so neat when you see a big ass school swimming to and fro in a tank

definately get some shrimp, the ones i have cardina japonica (amano shrimps) are the best algae eaters. you can also get some nerite snails, they're quite larger size and people swear by them being the best algae eaters...or of course, get some algae eating fish! plecos?

depending on what type of plants you're going to keep, you might be good with the lights you already have. i believe 6500k is great for freshwater...any higher better for corals/saltwater

I would say got with real plants, and community fish, hen you get the balance right, the tanks is a very mellow place, of course a fish like an Oscar throws that balance way out  and many of us make a mistake like that, I know I have, with 2 species so far, one was convicts (a sort of ciclid that wiped out everything except the plec, but we real interesting for a time, as they make there own community, though its rather sterile, a bit like classics stereotype chine, all the same shape, size and colour  } and another time with a walking catfish, who soon  ate all but the hardy-est of the convict, but the plec still made it thought.

now I'm real happy with my community, but feel the smaller shrimps wouldn't last long.

BoO-, thanks for the ebay tip, i have a few plants ordered not, that will be heading my way soon.

I'm real tempted to do as you sat and do away with the substrate and start again with something more beneficial to the plants, but it Will be a bit step, involving setting up my spare tank to hold the stock while I do it.

I think  i will, just not this week

A pleco would be cool. I've spent some time on a plecostromos forum. It is amazing how many different species of them exist and the wide variety of differences amongst them. I always liked the leopard pleco.

I'm starting to think plants with smaller fish and shrimp. I would love to get a 125 gallon tank for two oscars and a pleco, but I could use that money for more important things right now. I'm definitely starting to think about getting the tank set up again.

I post on APC too, boO. I can't believe you're getting grade S CRS.

I would think the ADA stuff would be cheaper in Europe, weird. We have Seachem and CaribSea for substrates here, I think the ADA shit is overpriced and overrated.

You live right by Germany, why not take advantage of all the Aquamedic products? I have one of their 4x39w HO T5 fixtures on my 125 gal tank and it's amazing. Just don't buy their bulbs, they burn out quickly and the spectrum is off. The GE Starcoats are the best bulbs I've seen, I think they're about 8500k, could be wrong on that though.

Here was a picture of my tank when it was close to it's prime:

Oh, that last pic reminds me. You might be able to get away with the dwarf puffers. I have 4 of them in my 125 and my cherry shrimp still lived. They didn't touch my Amanos at all.

As far as the HC goes... You're in Europe, you should be able to get it from Tropica, no?

i will take a photo tomorrow, it's crazy...the glosso took off quite quickly!

i ordered some plants from singapore...

getting some Hemianthus Callitrichoides for the 13.5 litre (or maybe i'll just decide to put it in the bigger tank)
Mini liverwort (mini pellia - VERY rare here)

gumby - yeah getting grade s CRS, i'm pretty excited about it! i put my rasboras and the 5 amano shrimps into the 54l so that it cycles quicker...fucking rasboras keep getting sucked into my ADA lily pipe inflow!! i've had to put sponges in 2 holes so i wouldn't have to go through the hassle of fishing them out...

aquamedic equipment believe it or not, is still very expensive here despite being near germany. and actually, prices for ada equipment is a fraction of the cost as it is here in europe. pretty ridiculous but let me tell you, i'm very happy with the quality. i've found a store in portugal that sells ada for almost the same price as adgshop or aquaforestaquarium in the US..so let's see how that is

i really like your tank! your plants look very healthy...

would anyone be willing to trade plants? i think i have a feeling this glosso is going to have to be trimmed...

This is all your fault BoO-
My ebay java moss arrived today, as did 4 more
shrimp, two are carrying eggs.

There just cheap Caridina japonica (Amano Shrimp) and if they do ok
I might get some CRS

Now I might have toi radically rethink my fish stock, and do away
with a few of the larger ones, as I'm way over stocked for a
well balanced planted tank according to that jap bloke.

MUAHAHAHAHA

now you're getting into shrimps!! just remember, it's pretty difficult to get the hatched amano eggs to survive...unless you buy another tank and dedicate it as a hatchery...they hatch and first live in brackish water...if the eggs hatch most likely they will die

ok ok fucking spending spree today

i bought 12 more rasboras. i had transfered the 4 rasboras and the 5 amano shrimps from the 13.5l to the 54 liter even though it's not done cycling...but since they're 1.50 each, i don't mind if some perish due to ammonia..but so far so good. i want it to cycle faster so the tank is ready for my crs...

speaking of crs, i got 3 today...low grade ones. i got them as companions for my 2 other crs in the 13.5 l, but ended up putting them in the 54l tank as well. ONE OF THEM IS PREGGORS i just realized...

here's my tank today...don't mind the marimo balls and the rocks with java moss...they're just there temporarily until i get another tank (YES i'm getting another fucking tank, stupid hobby )

the glosso is sending out tons of runners...doing well

BUT, today i had problems with my co2 tank. i just emergency ordered a 10 kilo co2 tank (ouch another 80 euros down the drain) which i will get on thursday. right now i have some yeast/water/sugar with a DIY co2 bottle hoping that it will start to inject some co2 into my tank...such is my luck

here's one of the new crs

here's miss preggors
