I'm going to try casing for my first time. I read somewhere that you should shake the grain at 100% colonization and case the day after (as opposed to shake right before casing) so that it has time to somewhat recover and have a better protection against contams.
I have one fully colonized qt jar i'm planning on casing tomorrow.

Should i shake it today or just leave it be untill tomorrow?

Wouldn't it be pointless to shake your jars since you're going to crumble your cakes anyways when you make your casing? Just be sure to shock freeze them and you shouldn't have to worry.

I'm using non wide-mouthed qt jars. Thus, in order to get the colonized rye out of the jar i have to shake the hell out of it so that the mycelial network brakes. The point of doing this a day before (in one day the grains wouldn't stick together) was giving the mycelium some time to recover from the shaking/crumbling.

But I guess i'll just leave it be for today and do that before casing.

My friend always waits a day after shaking before casing - shaking the jar kills portions of the mycelium, and can allow contams to take hold more easily. He has found that jars that were left to sit a day before casing seem to colonize the casing layer more quickly and evenly. He could just be hallucinating, however.
