Incubator problem
    #644770 - 05/25/02 11:55 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Ok I bought a 100 watt submerible fish tank heater the other day, and I put it in a glass, in my incubator, but it will not get warm enough (even on the highest setting)!!!!!! My question is how can I solve this problem, or should I have gotten the 200 watt heater (wich I did not do because I read on a post at the forest floor that you only need a 100 watt submersible heater)!!!!!! I think I might just fill the bottem of the incubator itself with water and sink the heater (might work better), but then I am going to use the same kind of heater (same brand and also 100 watt) to heat my terrarium so I would still have to fix this problem!!!!!! Somone please help!!!!

You need a bigger container to keep the water (one gallon that stays a contant 86 degrees will heat less than a 5 gallon that also stays 86 degrees. Filling the bottom with water... well, if it's the kind that wall mounts (say 8 inches) then you have to fill the tank up with that much water... you might not was enough room to have anything to incubate.

How long is your heater?

The general rule of thumb is 5-10 watts per 1 gallon of you terranium, so if you have a 20 gallong terranium, you should buy atleast a 150 watt or so aquarium heater.
ANd the reason the heater is fully submersible is because it is meant to be submersed in water. If it came with suction cups, just stick it to the bottom of your bin.

yeah if you are actually going to have an aquarium w/ fish in it

i would suggest filling up the bottom of the tub w/ water and submersing the heater, setting the temp to 86 and then placing another tub the same size inside that tub on stands (glass jars, etc)

there are quite a few threads about that right now - check out indicaz set up

or even this one

I don't see why the same rule wouldn't apply to terraniums. I mean, glass aquariums create more heat than rubbermaids or whatever, so if anything, the ratio should be higher.

because you aren't filling up the incubator setup w/ gallons of water be it a glass aquarium or a rubbermaid tub

people have gotten away w/ any range of 50-200W -- just whatever keeps it the optimal temp

The warm air created by the terranium with your aquarium heater in it will heat up the terranium sitting on top. The heat transpires or some shit. It will take a while to first heat it up, but give it time
