how do i network 2 computers to transfer files using cat5????

i have a cat5 cable i made at work, both have ethernet cards, so i know how to hook that part up...

but once they are hooked up by hardwire, how do i actually access the files on the one computer in order to transfer them to the other?

once you get the network setup... isnt it as easy and click and drag???

well, to connect the two directly you need a crossover cable, not a standard patch cable. Then after you get the correct cable, just set up a file as shared by right clicking on it and select 'sharing and security...' from the menu, then select shared. On the other computer go to My network places, and the file should be there. This is all assuming your using windows.

what is a crossover cable and a standard patch cable?

yes i am using windows

A crossover cable is used to connect two computers without a router or something similar. It's basically a two-way patch cable. With a regular patch cable, you have to have a router or something to create the network.

you can also make your own cross over cable with a normal patch cable.

they just switch 2 of the wires.

after that its pretty simple of putting things in a shared folder and then transfering them.

you need a hub, switch, or router.

when you have any of these items, assign the computers an IP address, or let them auto assign. Go to your drive you want to share, right click, and go to sharing...enable sharing.

then to find the ip address, go to run, type command, and in the window, type ipconfig /all

find the address of the computer you want to connect to then go to run, and type

\\1.2.3.4

well i dont have a router or money for one so thats outta the question.

what is a patch cable... is it anything like a cat5?

what if i were to make a new cat5 and switch some wires inside the fitting for a different configration?

yeah you can do that, its not hard, its all color coded.

cat 5 to crossover

patch cable to crossover

For a straight through cable, wire both ends identical.
4. For a crossover cable, wire one end 568A and the other end 568B

what exactly is the difference between a straight through cable and a crossover cable?

i think i have a straight cable with the 568a on both ends, it should just be as easy as making the other end 568b

The order of the wires, like you said. Crossover is for a connection between 2 computers and normal cable goes into a router/switch/hub.

apple computers automatically sense when you should be in a crossover situation and flip their RX/TX to cross over a straight thru cable... newer PCs and home routers and such are catching on and starting to support it... as long as one of the two computers you're trying to do is smart enough to do that, you can get away by connecting them with a straight thru patch... so if you have one handy already, give it a shot, it might auto-magically work. :smile:

alright i tried doing the sharing and security option when right clicking on a folder,

it will let me do this on the computer i want to transfer things to, but it will not allow me to activate this feature on the computer i want to transfer things FROM...

it says click the box below to activate networking... but the box is greyed out and wont let me click it.... how do i fix this?

off the top of my head, i'd guess that you need administrator access on the machine to enable networking. that, or there is some control-panel level setting switched on to disallow sharing & networking. no idea if such a feature exists - haven't really used XP in a few years - but try logging on as an administrator and see if that fixes it
