Sending large files through email
    #2134785 - 11/25/03 11:25 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I have a wav file I need to send, but my hotmail account won't allow nearly the capacity I need to send it. Anyone know of an email I can use that will allow about 24 MB?

Can you transfer the file by different means? ICQ, IRC/DCC, ftp, etc?

E-mail was never meant for files, large or small. Especially with POP delivery, IMAP is a little more acceptable but with POP until that message gets through the rest of the email behind it is stuck, and to the best of my knowledge doesn't support resuming. If its a really large file, find some other way.

Some ideas:

Use a simple FTP/HTTP daemon, tell them when the server will be available and the address and once their done disable it or remove it altogether. I don't believe HTTP was ever meant for large files either, but its a lot better choice then email.

Or find a free hosting provider who will supply enough space for you to upload it to, then give them the URL for it.

Maybe try converting the wav to mp3 format? You'll save alot of space.

Hrm.. I'm a little ignorant with these sorts of things so help me out..

I can't convert it to an mp3.. because it has to be in .wav... this is for the shroomery cd and he needs it in wav format to work with it as that is the best sound quality.

I just got SmartFTP, but I'm trying to figure out how to connect to a server that will take the files. I'm trying to connect to my geocities account through it but it doesn't seem to be going through.. I'll tinker with it some more I guess...

Unless you pay for your Geocities server, I am pretty sure they do not allow uploading mp3s or wavs. In my experience, anyways.

This site will let you sign up, perhaps temporarily (thirty days) and gives you 100 mbs of space that you can use towards any end. You will have to use an FTP Uploader to transfer files once you have made a domain, just make sure that you put the files into the "wwwroot" folder. Than you can take your domain address (mine, for example, is www.fireworksgod.frandt.com) and can then put a slash at the end of it, and then the file name, and the file can be downloaded by anyone on the Internet.

If you need help, just PM me, man, or email me at fireworks_god@hotmail.com. It is what I have been using to take music that me and some of my band have been making online and make it available to anyone on the net. As far as actually transferring the files, we have another server that a buddy of mine has with his Internet service that we use, but it is the same thing.

Like I said, just PM me of email me if you need help with any of this.

Good luck with the music, man.
Peace.

You can use Winrar or a similar packing tool, and pack your file into an archive limiting the archive file size to let?s say 2 mb.
Then you can send each chunk via email and the recipient can put them together again.
