How NOT to modify an ultra sonic humidifier

Hey y'all,

Thought i'd share this....just in case anyone else gets the same stupid idea.....

I can post a picture if anyone wants.

Ok so i've read a bunch of the teks on building greenhouses and really like the ones where the humidifiers are modified to hold lots more water or have a fill hole in the top that can be corked.

I think to myself...self you don't have to take the tank down everytime to fill that humidifier...just drill a hole in the top and fill it up with a funnel. Stick a cork in the hole when not in use.

I proceeded with this plan...

THE REALLY BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS PLAN....

The seal where the cork goes is not air tight....and the only thing that is keeping the water from leaking out is the fact that no air can normally get in....hence a nice leak.

SOLUTION:

Big gobs of sillicon....no more hole.


I can laugh about it now but i felt pretty stupid when i put my humidifier out of commision for 2 days in the middle of a crop...really messed up a couple of cakes.

instead...you should have just made you a reservoir for your thingy...lets see if i can find pics ...bah...ill just link you...

ouch... but hand misting a full terrirum isn't bad.

(does require more care, and frequest visits) but won't kill the crop.

sorry for the misfortune... time to get a coolmist. :wink::thumbup:

I've been looking all over the place for a cool mist impeller humidifier....haven't found one yet. Bought one of the wick ones by mistake once, I use it for FAE. I have the ultra sonic right in the FC and the CM outside piped in.

Awsome link total, definatly something to consider.

I work 12hr shifts so misting is great...when your home.

I've looked at a bunch of places around here, all the humidifiers are wick type. The ultra sonic i got was in the back, they didn't sell them anymore but had one left so i got it cheap. I think it's because people are idiots and slobs and poison themselves with them by never cleaning them or something. I lie...i did find a few utlra sonic's after i bought the one i have.

I bought a wick type cool mist and already cut it up so i cant return it. why is it that you cant use them?

I've heard tale of people getting by for a short period of time with wick type cool mists. Contams like to grow on the wick. Not something you want to expose your babies to.

I couldn't get the Rh past 60% with it. They move a lot of air vs water. You can treat the water to prevent contam in on wick.
