Old dowel rods

These are 1-year-old cultures I got from a friend. Some of them are starting to fruit in the bag. Can I still use them to inoculate rye grain?

Yes. You may want to remove any fruits.

I wouldn't. Bacteria will be present and it will take over the rye before the mycelium does. Once a culture goes into fruiting mode, they don't easily convert back to vegetative.

Your best bet would be to snip a couple of the fruits off and use them to transfer to the grain. A small fruit is much more likely to work than the spent dowel spawn.

Hmm? Why would bacteria necessarily be present? Also, with Ps. cyanescens, spawn pulled up by the mycelium roots attached to the fruiting body, can be used to colonize different substrates- thus it is vegetative. Why would this not work similarly?

its likely that there are many contaminats present after such a time.. you may want to try one of the more contanimate infriendly tek's, like the cardboard one, or perhaps burlap, simply soaked and strained, you can heat-treat it if you'd like, it could help if you get used burlap. roll it up with some of the dowels and put the whole thing into.. i guess ideally stamets recommends poster tubes or something like that.. somewhere it can stay moist..

what is the species ?
