Can I use Zeolite instead of Perlite?
    #6388864 -

Small emergency on my hands with my first ever PF cakes just days aways from pinning. I live in South Africa and every supplier of Perlite has either sold out or closed shop for the holiday period (remember it's the middle of summer here).

The only solution I can think of is to rip up these bags of Zeolite we've got lying around the house (supposed to absorb odours from the air) as it seems like a similar mineral to Perlite?

They differ. But, in a pinch it will work, just not as well.
Matter of fact, pumice, or lava rock will also work.

If your cakes are ready to be birthed but you don't have the materials to create a proper environment for them yet, you can put them inside of ziplock bags and store them in your refrigerator. This will slow the growth down tremendously while you get what you need.

Thanx guys. For a variety of reasons (mostly impatience) I think I want to go ahead with the fruiting as soon as possible.

The zeolite I have has been sitting around for about 8 years absorbing all sorts of particulants from the air. This won't create a potential contamination hazard will it?
