Vermiculite is used for its ability to absorb liquid and have a porous texture.

Perlite is used for its very porous texture and inability to absorb liquid.

Assuming your doing pf tek:

You shouldnt mix Perlite with BRF for your spawn media because it wouldnt retain water.

You could use perlite for the 1/2 layer on top of the media in the jar because perlite is porous and would serve the purpose of being a filter.

You shouldnt use perlite for a casing layer because it doesnt retain water (a key element to a casing layer).

You can purchase vermiculite over the Internet or order it from garden stores. Keep looking.

what about the fact that perlite upps humidity and what is humidity?I had a quart jar colonize with perlite and brf in it (not all the way cause it was a quart jar and i didnt feel it would finish) if you have no other choice it CAN work but its not recommended dont use jars any larger than 1/2 pint if u do decide to take this path.

Humidity is the moisture in the air.

Perilite puts moisture into the air..it doesn't hold moisture in. They are two different substances with two different uses and really shouldn't be used as substitutes for eachother.
