Just out of curiosity, where are you in your studies? Are you going for a doctorate right now?

I had a dream at some point where instead of transistors we would use the spin of electrons to determine on/off.  Spin up/Spin down, of course this isnt really feasible for many reasons however cool dream.

The Space Elevator will change things a lot, might not be too far away either.

Carbon nanotubes could do a whole lot for us, as could nanotech in general.
That is if nanotubes don't turn out to be a real health hazard, that would suck.

I can't wait for the Space Elevator. That would be so awesome.

But I agree with Wiccan that the most pressing technology we need is abundant cheap energy. Fission energy seems like a good intermediate step until we reach viable Fusion.

Also, as a biochemist, I would have to say that the genome technology is going to be big. We have completed the Human Genome Project in terms of decoding it, but once we have worked out what it means and how it all works, the possibilities will be endless, allowing us not only to effortlessly cure diseases and trauma injuries, but concoct a whole array of enhancements.

Applying it to other organisms, we will be able to make trees that grow into houses for example. And how cool would it be to grow shrooms on your head?

You could even have your brain set up to synthesise and deliver an intra-cerebral infusion of whatever substance you wanted just by thinking about it.

Well, it's technically the application of several existing technologies, but the use of carbon-fiber compounds in cars could make them much lighter while simultaneously making them stronger. Meanwhile, if a lot of the mechanical parts were made digital(as with the "fly-by-wire" technology used in modern military aircraft), essentially turning the car into a computer on wheels, the car could be made even lighter. Combined with a hybrid engine, these things could more than triple the fuel efficiency of the average vehicle on the road, without sacrificing performance. It's called the hypercar concept, and supposedly it's about 5 years away from being made fully available on the market.

I was going to go with this line also. Nano-tech / nano-bots. From micro cellular/DNA repair and nano surgery enabling 2-300 year lifespanns, smart fabrics, and the downside intelligent bio/nano warfare.
