more than one lover?
    #6356169 -

apparently that is the new practice known as polyamory.

i just read about it in this article
http://www.shoutwire.com/viewstory/42634/UK_Mom_I_Have_Too_Much_Love_For_One_Man_

i personally dont see how one could feel the same way emotionally towards two people. i pass no judgment on people who practice this, and more power to them if they make it work. but for me it seems very unappealing, dont know if im being prude about it or if its due to my upbringing but i feel like a monogamous relationship allows for a deeper connection between partners.

just wanted to know your thoughts and opinions on this.

Polyamory is far from new.  In fact, monogamy is the "new kid on the block" in terms of human sexual relationships.

I can't even love one person, let alone a couple.

Monogamous relationships go against the diversity aspect of evolution.

good point. its weird how culture can bring up these feelings of jealousy, when if one was raised in a culture where it was completely ok, it wouldnt be there. reminds you how important environment is to one's development and how there are probably no "intrinsic" values to a human being.

My wives wouldn't ever be jealous over me. They would be too busy munching on eachother's carpet to get upset.

Jealousy is rooted in a sense of scarcity and insecurity.  If we did not view love as a competition, or see lovers as a resource to be hoarded, polyamory would still be the standard practice.

Actually, considering the statistics on adultery, perhaps it IS still the standard practice.

And what if you were one of many husbands, with one wife to share?

That's not the way it works. We have the water to make your garden grow. And to diversify the population you would need one male mating with several females, not the other way around.

  To diversify the population?  I don't think that this is the only reason to practice polyamory.  What about entertainment and pleasure?  Most men just roll over and start snoring after one orgasm, whereas women can (and do) have multiple orgasms all night long.

Fresh horses!  I call for fresh horses!

This depends upon how far back you want to go.

Some theorists believe that human language only evolved about 40,000 years ago.

If this is true, I think that "consensual sex" is the real new kid on the block. For the 2 million years before language, well, let's just say that men in the state of nature don't usually call you the next day...

So you're saying you believe women were simply raped for thousands of years and that's how we got by up until recently?

I don't think consentual sex is anything new man..

Back in the day, before man learned that his sexual actions brought about a child.  There was no "mine" "my" or thing of that sort.  They lived in groups, probably had orgies bi or monthly on full moons etc.  But then when we got onto that when you have sex you create a birth of a new person, and that this child is "My" child, and that it's my responsibility, we created the "ego"  self realization, we took the group and broke it down to the power of the one.

Now we can live in the now or we can live in the past, what ever floats your boat, but if you are in the now and you find yourself chilling with the past, then why not be in the now right then and now. :dogpile:

Well, considering we got by via out right barbarism for thousands of years before civilizations finally arose, I don't think it's not a possibility.

Which is more likely:

Large muscular cavemen with a desire to have sex with a lot of women and no spoken language used their brawn to have their way

OR

Those same cavemen put up with extended periods of frustration for each and every woman they came across while communication was worked out via signs, symbols, and other methods

Also keep in mind that many wild animals don't really have consensual sex either (anyone who's ever watched a male squirrel chase down a female knows this pretty well).

Of course, the theorists that say language actually arose 2 million years ago (as opposed to 40,000) could be right instead, and in that case consensual sex has probably been the practiced norm for as long as humans have been recognizably human.

I think that she's entitled to be with as many men as she wants to be with, however, when you exchange vows with someone, you make a commitment to them - and sh hasn't honored that. She could have asked for a divorce, but didn't. She also has 2 sons, and isn't exactly instilling good morals in them right now. People can talk about "thousands of years ago" how it used to be and how monogamy is a new thing, but the fact of the matter is, it's the way things are now, in the present. And having your 2 young sons wake up to 2 men at the breakfast table is just plain wrong.

It's not so much that sex was always non-consensual, it's that it didn't matter whether or not the woman wanted to have sex.  Prior to the brain development which led to language abilities, we were pretty basic creatures.  (Still are, in many ways. )

1 in 2 thinks rape is OK
