Tendons/ muscles in the arm
    #6351004 -

When I do pull-ups theres not really a pain, some thing in my left arm gets messed up, leading to discomfort. It happens on the inside of my elbow, feels like a nerve being pinched maybe, somethings not right. And it doesnt happen in my right arm. I did a few, now my left arm and hand need a break, cant type as fast or it hurts...
I think its carpal tunnel syndrome, but im not sure. maybe it has to do with not exercising in so long and taking so many things for a long time..
Any ideas on what this could be, things I can do to help it?
thanks

Rest. I started a job awhile back where I was doing a lot more strenuous physical activity involving pounding dough out with my hands for hours and it really started to take a toll. I would get shooting pains in my arms and I avoided using my computer because it hurt so much to type. I wore wrist braces for a little while, but nothing really seemed to help except for when I found a desk job and was able to quit.

So give them as much rest as you can. Get a couple wrist braces and wear them when you're sleeping at night. Its worth a try.

Your elbow shouldnt hurt from doing pull-ups, no matter how long its been since youve worked out. Take it easy on your joints and dont stress them (they are pretty delicate). If something feels wrong then dont do it, youre just gonna hurt yourself even more. If anything you might wanna go to a good phyiscal therapist and get a check out just incase. But if you dont go to the physical therapist, then just stop do pull-ups. Do other excercises that dont harm your elbow and get your workout that way.
If you wanted, after a few months or so of other excercises, go back and try some pull-ups, and if its still giving you problems, either you get checked out or you dont do pull-ups ever again...

Could be your grip strength or posture. Some people weren't meant to do some exercises. Myself, I have a shitty 225lb bench and rotator cuffs that do NOT agree. But then again I can bench the 100lb db's on incline for multiple sets, probably even the 110lbs natural if I wanted to. But something like behind the neck pull downs or even straight BB curls irritate me a little.

You can practice and practice things, and if you get injured then you definitely should have taken the warning signs with more caution. Could be many different things. Just keep an eye on it and look for alternative hand grips or completely different exercises if pull ups look futile (hopefully not though, I love them).

BD is onto something with your strength and posture. You have to be pretty strong to do a good pullup.

Try getting warmed up before doing pullups. The last time I did a good workout that included chins (haven't done pullups in forever it seems), I walked to the gym, stretched out, did a handstand, and then did the chins. I was able to do a good handstand because I had stretched and I was able to do good chins because I had done a handstand. You might wonder why a handstand would help you to do a set of pullups. It's because it's pretty much the exact same position you will be in at the beginning of a set. You will find that, when you jump up to the bar, you feel much more powerful. Your whole body, including your tendons, will be ready to work. You could even do some pushups somewhere in that mix, too.

Keep in mind that you may indeed feel a little sore in your elbows after doing a few sets of pullups, but I think that the kind of pain that you're describing is the kind that you don't want. That is a sign that you need to be more careful. You should be in control with these movements. Think of being able to stop at any time and what kind of intensity that you would have to have to do that. I'm not saying that you should waste your energy, but you should realize that the more tension, the better the results. You could do 1 good set and it would be better than if you did 3 bad ones. You always want to aim for your best. Anything less is a waste of your talent. Those are Steve Prefontaine's words. Furthermore, you will certainly see better results with that kind of attitude. Don't stress yourself out trying to do it perfect.. just focus on what is right and powerful.

Yup. I like to warm up before doing chin ups as well. They recruite a lot of muscles!! Lots of big ones like the spinal erectors and lats, so smaller ones like your rhomboids and whatnot. Do what you will to get blood in there, just don't do them cold.

Like hobit said, they're demanding! Don't force it, and don't exhaust yourself before doing them because it'll undoubtedly detract from your form. You can even get a friend to place their hand under your foot and help you get a few extra reps. They're really fun. Just get the feeling and it's all good.

I was really suprised when I my friend helped me to do the last rep on a set of chins. All he had to do was push up with his fingertips on my lower back to help me up. There is no way that I would've gotten up without that.
