mushroom ID

Habitat: forest

Gills: dark brown, to black. When touched left black marks on my fingers

Stem: white, tan and brown. Hollow in the center of stem, not filled.

Cap: orange, white and brown. 15cm diameter. very fragile, it broke very easily when when i picked it.

Spore Print: left for a few hours, brown, black, or tan.

Bruising: none apparent to me.

location: picked in northern Cal.

other: is this edible, or active?

Looks like a Psathyrella. Possibly Psathyrella (now Lacrymaria) velutina. Definitely not active, edible if you were really hungry in the woods.

By the way, this is your 4th post, and 4th created thread,.

In the future, when you have several mushrooms to identify, please condense them into one thread rather than creating new ones. It just keeps the board a little bit cleaned up.

I agree with xmush on this one. Looks like psathyrella so far, very close to velutina.

I concur I hear there relatively tasteless and somewhat slimy with age, if you were lost in the woods and had to survive it'd be something too consider other then that, no thanks.

Were those growing in the same spots as the dry one you posted earlier? That one might have just been a dried version of this.

When you smash a mushroom up so bad as to break it into 6 seperate pieces, you also smash the gills. When the delicate gills are damaged, they do not drop spores.
That is why your spore print is so light.
