Still, rotten dairy/flesh (both essentially decomposing mammal fat + protein) reigns supreme, not too odd if you consider they smell akin to a human cadaver, which is as primal a biologic danger sign there is.

Pyridine.. That's on my list of stenches I'd like to get a whiff of. Most people either are completely disgusted or fascinated by it, like with ether which is my favorite smelly solvent. Many people hate the smell of ether ("old hospital/pharmacy smell") but I love it!



The stench I'd love to smell one day is the world's most potent stench according to some sources, propane-2,2-dithiol. This substance is formed when acetone is saturated with hydrogen sulfide (highly toxic) like so:

(CH3)2C=O + 2 H2S --> (CH3)2C(SH)2 + H2O

P22T is said to be the most potent smell there is, and it happens to be a smell so godawful that it is being looked into as a nonlethal weapon - to repel crowds with stink instead of tear gas. I suspect it has the rotting leek/eggs/skunky smell familiar from scented natural gas or propane in high dilution. I know just looking at it that's toxicity may approach that of cyanide in high concentrations.
But in a medically harmless dilution - how bad can a smell possibly be? In my quest to explore the extreme realms of the human experience, P22T is a place I'll probably visit some day, in a forest somewhere with a testtube A and B and a bit of bleach in my pocket
