organic traditions garden lime?

I was just curious to if anyone has used this in their casing...i am just curious becuse it says "safer than hydrated lime"...just triggered some thoughts... any info appreciated

it's pelletized. it's too slow to be effective in a casing layer. i made the same mistake a while back.

yeah it is pelletized...but can't that problem just be solved with a simple crushing?

I use it all the time in 60:40 peat/verm casing mix. Because it’s pelletized, you have to dissolve it in water, which I do by mixing peat, water and lime until it’s soupy, and then adding the verm along with a few pinches of gypsum (also Espoma Organic Traditions). Steam thoroughly in the microwave (3 pulses), let it cool, and you have a great little casing mix.

so it prolly wouldnt make any difference if I used it in the 50/50 as long as I dissolved the pellets in the water i am going to use to moisten the verm/peat?

Use calcium carbonate, or preferably hydrated lime. What you have is not useful for mycology. In addition to the pellets that don't break down, it's from a dolomitic source, and thus has high Mg, which is not acceptable. This has been covered dozens of times. Yeah I bought that kind of lime first too. Everything about it leads you to thinking you got the right stuff.

Then I read pickling lime so I bought some and it turns out to be Calcium Chloride, NOT Calcium Hydrate.

Any usefulness to this pickling lime I picked up? Other than as a desiccant, I mean. There's so little of it, I feel like a chump paying almost three bucks for a couple of puny envelopes. Not enough to dry anything.
