RIP Flying Squirrel
    #6297878 -

Today, a flying squirrel flew down our chimney, into the house, and around the living room.  A family member was trying to herd it out through the sliding glass doors when it decided to land on the floor for a minute, where it was promptly grabbed by the cat upstairs and had it's neck snapped.

I've never seen a flying squirrel like this before.  It was very very small, with a flat tail, extremely soft fur, and the typical flaps that connect it's arms to it's torso to allow it to glide. It was very cute.

RIP Squirrel  :frown:

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen one of those. I'd like to some time.

We have tons of the regular squirrels, many of which end up becoming road pies unfortunately.

In the woods, I sometimes feel something hit me in the head and I look up to see some squirrel peeling open some kind of nut, way up in a tree.

They're nocturnal, pretty rare to see them.

Cool guys.

I should have taken a picture while I was upstairs looking at it earlier.  It's outside right now, but I'm betting a fox or something will eat it by morning :frown:

This is what it looked like

Yeah, I guess there are a bunch of them that live in our woods, but like you said, it's rare to actually see one. I can't say I'm positive that it came in through the chimney, but I can't think of any other possibility - no open doors or windows or anything, and one of the fireplaces is in the living room, and that's where the little guy was whipping around.

I've got a sugar glider. Pretty much the same thing, but sugar gliders are also in the family of marsupials. They're pretty awesome.

There are tons of them in the woods around our cabin, they fly to the bird feeder and we can watch them if we make a fire.

They can glide really far and accurately.

That chimney needs a cap if that's how it got in, bigger animals could get in.

It was actually flying around the living room?  That must have been super-duper adorable.

I'm fairly sure the chimney does have a cap on it...

Is it possible an animal that small could have gotten past the cap on it?  Or maybe it came in through a vent somewhere...but all the AC vents have been closed up at this point.

There's lots of owls here, and I like to listen to them at night when I'm in bed.  I supposed if there's no cap on the chimney (but I think there is), then an owl could come down   There's also a huge family of turkeys that roost right outside the front door.  The most we've counted in one pack is 15 of them.  There's a ton of deer, too - but I don't think they can get down the chimney

Unfortunately I didn't get to see it, other than after it's neck was snapped and it just looked like it was asleep.  Suffer's stepdad is a nature loving type and called us down in our apartment to have us come up and take a look at it before he tossed it back into the woods, since it's rare to get to see one and thought we'd be interested   I wish I got to see it glide around...and I wish he had locked the cat in the other room before trying to herd the thing out, but I'm sure that was the last thing on his mind, while trying to get this thing out of the house

The cap might have a gap small enough for the squirrelly, or maybe the cat brought it in.

Opossums and raccoons get in chimneys all the time.

A group of turkeys is a flock.:lol

The cat was inside when this happened, so I don't think it brought it in.  I called the flock a family because it seems that there are baby turkeys as well as males and females, so I assumed they were a family   Maybe they're just pals.  Either way, they're pretty cool looking.

They're totally unfased by our presence, too.  Just nonchalantly walkj around like they own the place   It's cool to watch them flutter up and over our stone wall, which stands about 7 feet high or so - they're not the most graceful flyers.

It sure is   These don't look like they have much meat on them though - not good eating unfortunately.  We do have some bows and arrows in the garage though, and a few shotguns, should the need arise to resort to eating one of them

Shotgun + turkey head.

They have plenty of meat.

I wish I would have gone turkey hunting this year.

I'd rather take out one of the deer. I hear venison is yummy, though I've never had it.
