chicken of the woods!!!!!
    #6291017 -

got about 25lbs off a huge tree (not on a eucalyptus), what do i do to clean and preserve this much mushroom? is it alright to dry out? should i bag it in the fridge? ive got friends who will help me eat it, and i left maybe 4 or 5 large clusters like this there (sepperate trees), but i didnt bring my camera so no habitat pics. i will go back when im hungry for more ^_^

any recipes or advice on how to prepare this thing is helpful, im about to clean the sink sparkley so i can wash it up good, some bugs on it.

they are a lot like the consistancy of chicken. It looks and feels like white chicken meat.

the part closest to where it was on the wood is woody tasting and tough, but the outer parts are tender.

that there is five 1gallon ziplocks filled to the brim with strips

thanks for your advice coon.

there was some areas between the shelfs where it looked like bacterial rot had gotten to it. i made sure to cut all the blackish/purple marks off the top, and washed them up pretty good.

i had an easy time slicing it into strips with my vegetable dicer, but i about broke my arm trying to get it off the tree. I only took one half of the cluster on the tree, and there was another 4 or 5 trees in the area with clusters just as big. This is more than ill need for a while, ill go back to the habitat later for pics though, its a beautiful foggy forest that was misty and damp and perfect for the fungi, one of those mystical misty forests like u would see on fern gully

alright enough rant, ima go make some burgers for dinner, ill try some of these tomorrow.
can they be used as a chicken substitute? I.E. soups, veggie wraps etc, or just fried? my gall bladder doesnt get along with oils too well :frown:

most of the tender outter part had gone weird/rotten, but out of 5 zips im sure i wont miss a thing from this mushroom.

oregon, i might try that, but my galls been giving me some issues lately and oils arent my style.

has anyone steam cooked them before? i might try that.

thanks for the advice poboy, ill make a wrap out of some tomorrow, to see if we can handle each other.

i bet the more fibrilous parts [not the downright woody stuff, nothing cures that] would be good for canning. the pressure cooking might do wonders.

I recently had the opportunity to find and eat some Chickens, in Minnesota (they do not grow wild here in Florida).

They were very good. We tested them by cooking them up in oil with pepper and salt (just eating them straight without putting them into a meal). They were very good fresh.

I have heard of some people experienceing stomach discomforts from eating them, but we were fine when eating them.

I would think that they would dry up fine and you can re-constitute them easily (i may be wrong about that because I have never seen them being sold dry, only fresh). :stoned:

only the tip segments dry well IME. even the still rather tender parts further towards the apex tend to become more fibrilous/woody with drying. still edible, but not as good.

my mom ate some last night and threw up about 10 minutes after it went down, but i fried up a little in olive oil and mixed it with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, etc and made a veggie wrap. it was really good and it actualy kinda tasted like chicken, and i didnt get sick. my dad ate some too and he didnt get sick.

funny thing is, my mom grew up for years eating these and they never bothered her stomach until now.

its weird how that works.

im thinking of dicing it into cubes and making shishkabobs, hell yeah!
