maitake (grifola frondosa)? hen of the woods first find maybe

I think i may have found my first hen of the woods ever today... let see what the experts have to say...

habitat: Found growing from a hardwood stump near Grand Rapids, MI. Immediately reminded me of chicken of the woods (the lines on the topside), but the color what wrong and it wasn't as meaty.

underside: white

topside: tan-brownish patterns similar to chicken of the woods

spore print: not yet available

Other info: growing in thick heavy clusters

Looks like hen of the woods to me. This one is hard to match, like trying to differentiate regular cannabis from cbd flower. Nice pics.

I found what I thought for sure was a hen one time, but after closer examination the pores stained black on handling and I discovered it was the close look a like black staining polypore which is supposedly also a good edible.  Your first pic definately looks hen, but the second actually resembles what I found.  Are they different specimens in the different pics?

there are some maitake look alikes out there, but they have larger pores. But i think you got the real deal.

the first and third pic are the same specimen, the second was groing about 2 inches from it on the same stump. pics 4, 5 and 6 of my hopeful hens are off of the big one in the first and third pics...

What kind of tree were they growing under? Typically they prefer oak and beech. And usually live trees too. But those certainly look like hens, although I've only seen them a few times.

#1 looks like a Pholiota from above.. I saw some coming out of a live tree last year as well.

#2 could be a Lactarius. Might want to cut it and check for signs of a milky latex. Another possibility is Russula - Russulas usually have a unique flesh texture that crumbles easily.

#3 need to see gills/rest of mushroom, spore print etc.

#4 maybe a small coprinus? Hard to even see the mushrooms in that pic.

#5 same goes for this one as 3.

I thought that was the case. Does the second one turn black when handled or shortly after handled? Meripilus can look a lot like hen of woods as is evident here... http://www.mushroomthejournal.com/coma/ey/Meripi191.html

I feel like the specimen in 1 and 3 definately is grifola, but #2 is Meripilus.

The 'hens' show no signs of black staining from handling, the woods it was growing in is a mixture of birch, beech, maples, and oaks with a few elms here and there. the stump is so old i do not have a clue which kind of tree it is but there were beech and oaks and a couple maples directly around it and hanging above it.

Could anybody (preferably a Mod or other person on the list of trusted names for IDs, with a knowledge of maitakes) please confirm this find or tell me other signs i need to look for. I know that they grow in michigan in the fall and the similararity to chicken of the woods' shading pattern on the top is what clued me into the idea of 'hen'. I tried printing on foil because I'm out of black paper for light colored prints, but no print is visible to me yet and i haven't tried it on white paper knowing that maitake has a white print...


The last 5 were mainly just to show what else i found but i do appreciate the attempts at IDing them eris.

#1 I had never seen in these woods yet so i took a picture

#2 I'm fairly conifident is a russula I plan on trying to ID at Russula IDing page from ToxicMan

#3 was growing from one of the horse shit piles where we dump poo form our horse stalls. Non active non edible species...

#4 was growing out of a half of an old hay bale which is almost entirely colonized on the inside with what i thought was psilocybe cubensis mycelium (as i spawn 5 quarts of colonized rye to it earlier this year, which is when it started to colonize) as the mushroom suggests it unfortunately is not p. cubensis, no big loss i have plenty of successful outdoor patches.

#5 looked like it might have 2 seperate types. 1000s of LBMS like this growing from dead logs i didn't think much of it. Pretty sure to be nonedible nonactive.

Wow, wtf. My post must have been cut off or something. I do remember commenting on the hens.. I guess I messed it up. Anyways they look right as far as I can tell.
They can be one of the biggest mushrooms - the size itself says a lot. They can be pretty variable. It is suggested to just start with a tiny amount, as they cause allergic reactions for certain people. Only young/fresh specimens should be used.
Before consuming something, you should be able to feel 100% sure about it yourself. While we try our best to ID things, what we say should just be used as a starting point for your own identification.
