Mushroom help and IDs please ?

Here's afew more shrooms ive found today,, any help appreciated as always,, :laugh:.


First shroom,









Habitat - Found in a deciduous woodland, mostly populated by beech and oak.

Gills - Decurrant. Creamy brown in colour with small brown blotches. Gills produce 'milk' drops where damaged.

Stem - Reddish brown, stuffed ( small hollow starting ), brittle ( snaps very easily ). Cream to reddish brown on the inside when snapped. 1.5cm diameter.

Cap - Reddish brown, depressed, 6.0cm diameter.

Spore print - White.

Location - England.

Smells non mushroomy.

I think it might be 'Lactarius rufus' ?.





Second shroom,











Habitat - Found in a deciduous woodland, mostly populated by beech and oak.

Gills - Cream white ( more white than cream ), slightly attached to stem, very brittle.

Stem - Cream white ( again more white than cream with no other hues ), stuffed, brittle ( easily snapped ). 2.0cm diameter.

Cap - Purply light brown, slightly depressed at the centre, brittle. 6.5cm diameter.

Spore print - White.

Bruising - No immediate bruising.

Location - England

Doesn't really smell of anything. I think it might be a Russula ( not certain though ) but i'm not sure what type..
It's an old specimen so i don't know if you can help.



Ive found a load of these puffballs in the same wood that i found the other shrooms.
They're pure white inside, i'm just after abit of reassuring that they're ok to eat ?..
Any cooking ideas would be cool too ?, ive heard they don't taste of much.
I have half a bag full of them,, :smile:.

Lactarius, Russula & Puffball in that order. Hang on a sec, I'll get my book out but I'm pretty crap with IDing Russulas...

I thought the top one might be 'Lactarius rufus', it doesn't have the zonal cap of 'lactarius quiteus', there's a chance it might have been growing under oak though..

I'm useless with Russulas..

Any ideas on how i can cook these puffballs ?

According to the numerous pics of Lactarius quietus and Lactarius rufus in my book it looks much closer to the Oak Milk Cap (Lactarius quietus.)

Lactarius rufus only grows under pine and you said they were found in a deciduous woodland, populated by beech and oak.

Lactarius quietus doesn't always show concentric bands but it can show vague concentric spotting which I can make out in your pics. I'm going with the Oak Milk Cap (Lactarius quietus.)

As for the Russula, if you stroke the gills do the immediately break up into slivers or are they oily to the touch and flexible?

The puffballs are Lycoperdon pyriforme, common and edible when young.

It was the colouring on the cap that was putting me off, my book says lactarius rufus grows amongst birch aswell and there were afew of those growing around..

I can see the slight zoning near the edge though,, :smile:.
And it was more likely to be growing under oak.

The russula gills break off into slivers..

Do you think both of the puffballs are edible ?. I'm always going off this pure white inside thing but i don't know if that's a 100% way to make sure they're safe

Hmmm, can't help you there unfortunately then. I have to use iron salts to ID alot of them

They're both the same species and yes, they are edible if white inside. They're kind of like tofu, not much taste to them but the draw in other flavors well  :smile:

Lol,, not a very good one 'Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Europe' by 'Edmund Garnweidner'.
I can hardly ever find anything i find in there..

It says "In large masses below spruce, pine and birch on acid soils; one of the most common milk caps".

I have two others, one says they grow in coniferous and mixed woods ( 'Mushrooms and other fungi' by 'Dr. M. Svrcek and Dr. J Kubicka' )

And the other says they grow under pine or in sphagnum bogs ( 'The Mushroom Identifier' by 'David Pegler and Brian Spooner' )

:shrug:

I dunno, but i think your right on the ID..

I only really use the Brit one for quick reference, i heard you mention a book the other day so i'm going to try and get hold of that..

LOL, that was the first book I bought years ago! I ended up chucking it in the bin, complete and utter pile o shite!!!  :crazy:

Haven't heard of the other two books you've got...

It was a present from my bro last Christmas,, but your right i can never find anything i want.

I'm getting more into this now though so i will invest in a better one,, :laugh:.

I can't even remember which one you said you use now ?,, can't be bothered looking for that thread again, lol..

I read afew reviews about it on Amazon and it sounded about the best..

Main one I use is called 'Mushrooms and other fungi of Great Britain & Europe' by Roger Phillips but he just came out with a new book in late August that I've yet to buy which is simply called 'Mushrooms.'

The one I've got is out of print and costs quite a bit second hand on Ebay. His new book is amazing apparently but you've got to know what your looking for as there's no keys in it apparently.
