drugs, studying, and college
    #6178700 -

I'm a junior in college with a B- average. However, during January I began smoking bud again, and it was a daily habit for quite a few months. Throw that in with generally terrible study habits and an inability to get myself out of bed in time to make 8am classes....I'm going to dig my own academic grave if I don't change it RIGHT NOW.

It is midterm and I'm probably barely pulling a C-, I have to change this.

I've cut back my smoking to only weekends, as well as all other drug use as much as possible (unless I'm ahead/have nothing to work on). The thing is though, I've NEVER had good study habits...so I don't know how to fix that huge problem as well as my inability to make it to class.

I'm really reaching out for help here, I realize I'm a student first and a psychonaut second...but I need to force that on myself and make it actually true.

Any suggestions are highly welcomed!

Drop out.

Or take easier classes, I recommend History of the Motion Picture for any Art-history credits you need.
Astronomy is your best bet for a physical science. Much easier than chemistry or biology.
If any math credits are required then you need to switch your major, yo. Get out now and think about majoring in something like agriculture. Or in my case, art.

I'm good at math though, but I only need the two math credits needed to get a BS in Psychology.

STUDY

I do all my assignments like my life depended on it, but I've never had too much drive when it comes to studying (even though the time spent studying is MUCH more valuable than time spent on HW). But you eventually have to face reality and realize that a night or two of studying is worth weeks and weeks of HW assignments, so you gotta fucking force yourself to sit the fuck down with your book/notes/HW and READ, then when you've read it all over, go through the book and do odd problems and only when you've struggled and tried as hard as you would be forced to on the exam, then and ONLY then can you check the back of the book.

turn off your computer and just do it. there's no secret to studying, just think of what would help you on the exam and without second thought, just do it.

Yeah, pot makes college alot harder. I smoked the whole way through but I had at least quit doing psychedelics.

Fortunately, I had graduated by the time I was 21 so I didn't become a raging alcoholic until afterwards.

Also, get rid of your TV and X box. I will hold them for you.

1. Quit your pot smoking again - or move it to weekends only - no exceptions.

2. Set a regular sleep pattern, even if you dont have class untill 1pm on a day, still get up early /every/ day as if you were going to an 8am class, even though my earliest class is at 1pm this semester, I still try and ensure I am up/out of bed by 8am at the latest

3. At the end of every week, sit down and go through your course outlines and figure out - What has been done / what needs to be done / what readings need to be done / any tests comming up / etc -- pretty much, map out "whats due when and how much is it worth?"

4. Setup a timetable for doing the things you figured out in #3 - and try to stick to it. I generally leave it as "do X on Y day", but if you want - go a step further and actually set aside periods of time (ie: Tuesday from 1pm-3pm, do reading / homework for class X)

5. Do homework /every/ night -- even if you dont have homework, study ahead in a class, or do extra-review

6. Set aside 'free time' --- this is just as important as having study time, if you never have any time to yourself, you will just burn out. Even if its just a "after 10pm each night, I wont do anymore work" and use the last few hours before going to bed to relax/unwind

7. Save partying / harder drugs for weekends where its either a long weekend, or you have minimal work comming up the week after. If you are going to be partying on a weekend, do /extra/ school work the day or two before you party to get slightly ahead.

8. When you are studying, turn off MSN, turn off chat, hell - disconnect the internet. I find a big help for me is going to the school library to study, puts me into a more focused 'work mode' then if I am doing it at home.

9. Make use of the time between classes to do extra studying/homework

10. Try and have that weeks readings for class done before the lecture that covers them, not after. My general routine is : read it a few days before the lecture, attend lecture, then do questions relating to the lecture after. *** DO QUESTIONS EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT MARKED. I have a bunch of classes which dont even assign homework questions - or, they are assigned but never marked for grades - but do them anyways if you have the answers/soultions available, this will be invaluable to helping you do well on tests/midterms.

11. Any assignment that is due (essays/etc) - try and aim to have it done 2 or 3 days before the deadline, this will give you the extra day or two to put 'spit and polish' onto it, and maybe turn it from a B paper into an A paper. The 2 or 3 days before the deadline should be for final touch-up work, not developing major new points/etc.

Not to sound harsh...

Quit acting like waking up is so damn hard and get your ass out of bed. Put your alarm clock somewhere where you have to get out of bed and move to get to it.

Go to all your classes and pay attention.
Do your assignments.

You can pull at least a B this way with little to no effort.

Also.....

- Goto bed early, part of why waking up is so hard, is probably because you are staying up too late.

- Start working out, a little bit of physical activity can go a long way to improving other areas of your life. You'll sleep better, easier to focus, and also adds a level of discipline to your day to day life which can help set the schedule for doing homework

- Try and eat better meals and bigger breakfasts

Im graduating this semester (pre-pharmacy) and then going to med school and if I picked anything up from friends the last 5 years, some people just arent ready to settle down and focus on school.
My suggestion is take time off, relax, live and then when your head is in the right place and you are ready to put in an effort go back to school.
I wasted my first 2 years and a lot of money. Go get jobs, multiple jobs and decide what field you might be interested in and then sign up for classes.
Its not worth it in the long run to struggle through school and classes you hate, it will just be that much harder

college is a lot of cognitive thinking. as pot generally makes people lazy and settle for being mediocre, most people I know choose to not smoke pot in college, that or limit it to weekends. Since it affects everyone differently, I can only speak for myself when i say, theres no way I could pull off a pot habit and school at the same time. If you are having problems, I recommend quitting altogether, as you'll noticed dramatic improvement in school if you work hard. Remember, hard work in college does pay off..eventually  GOOD LUCK!!

It doesn't have as much to do with drugs as it does with your own personality. I'll give my story as an example.

After HS I did not go to college, I took a year off. When I did start college I didn't like it and I failed some classes. During the next semester I dropped out because I found it boring. During all this time I did NOT do any kind. No caffeine, no alcohol, no Cannabis, nothing. I did smoke cigarettes but that was maybe 2 packs within 2 years.

Now I am in college again and I am doing OK. I smoke pot almost daily and I smoke a cigarette a day (no more, no less, but I'll prob cut down on that too). Anyway, I am doing fine for the most part.

I am doing bad in one class but it has nothing to do with the drugs. Last week for example, I had lots of homework to do. My friends came over w/ pot and I refused to smoke until I finished my homework. Instead of doing the work though, I was just sitting there staring at my book for about 4 hours. I was completely sober but was just too depressed to do the work.

The motivation isn't there for me. When I get insurance I will get Adderall for my depression, fatigue and general lack of interest in everything.

Go to school to shine. Do it, or don't do it . . simple. What's the use in struggling with the in between (the stress of going to class, worrying about grades)? You have all the time in your life to do drugs and fuck girls. Make your classes and assignments first priority. There will be off time.

Excellent advice kaniz! Also, if you're having a problem with studying but not the homework, talk to your teacher/professor about assigning extra homework/projects for you. In most cases they will work with you and give you extra problems. They can't really give you extra points unless whatever you're doing is offered to the whole class... But if you've been working with them and showing your desire to learn, most will help you. Come final grade time, if your score in the class is a few points below a better grade they will just bump you up if you've been meeting with them over the term. Most teachers want you to do well [not all, unfortunately], so show them that.

I was a heavy smoker, but then quite after the first two weeks of college. I stopped taking mushrooms once a week, and now I only take them once every 2 weeks. As of now I have a 4.0 gpa, and I'm getting the best grades out of everybody in pretty much all of my classes. To be completely honest with you, I believe that indulging in mushrooms is the reason as to why this occurs. They keep me focused on my goals of life. They reinforce when I need to study. College really isn't that hard, man. Lay off the pot a bit. Smoking every once in a while is ok. Go to class, take notes, and study. Excersize to make sure that your brain isn't clouded.
