Why don't they have cell phones...

that also work as universal remotes. I mean when you can't find your remote you most likely have a cell phone on you, and it has the same numbers...I'm sure with a little bit of Java and a transmitter it would be feasible. It just seems like a logical innovation.

That would cause total chaos.  Imagine what it would be like it a sports bar, at this critical time of year when MLB, NFL, CFL, NBA, and NHL are all on tv at the same time.

na you can make locks on TVs so they only work if you use a code number.

my friend used to have a watch that he could turn the tv on and off, change channels and raise/lower the volume it was pretty cool.

we used to fuck with the teacher in class... good times.

Well, PalmOS PDAs have infrared ports, and for years now there have been apps to use the PDA as a remote. And I happen to have a smartphone that runs PalmOS. So yeah, I already have this.

Actually.. they do.

Kind of.

PDA's have IR transmitter/receivers built in, and there is software available for them that let's them learn the function of any button on an IR remote. You can use it to control anything that uses IR... what gets interesting is when you assign macro's to specific buttons on the touchscreen.. like "Play xbox"

Which:
1. Turns on the xbox
2. Turns the TV on.
3. Sets the TV to video input 2
4. Turns on the receiver
5. Changes the receiver to AUX input #1
6. Sets the receiver's volume to 25%.

All with one button push.

They also make PDA's that are solid phones, too. Lots of nice little smart phones kickin around.

So, the short answer is: they already exist.
